At 9:26 ET, the moon is still bright, shiny white--the brightest I've seen it in ages. Really spectacular. It's a little higher at maybe 45 degrees.
The eclipse has begun! The lower left corner, from about 5:30 to 8 o'clock is black, like the night sky. Looks like the good half of an Oreo with a little nibble taken out of the near edge of the Stuff.
The thing that amazes me is that so many parts of the world are able to see this at the same time. Same moon. It makes everything seem so much smaller and closer together.

At 9:43, a bigger bite has been taken out of the Stuff. It's gone from 3:30 to 9:30 o'clock. The edge of the shadow is slightly curved.
The bite doesn't go through the cookie, though. You can just see the moon underneath the shadow--it's a dark gray. No orange or red yet.
This is just exactly how I like to eat Oreos! Swivel the top off, then scrape the Stuff off with my front teeth . . . bit by bit.

At 10:00, the bite is 2/3 through the Stuff. You can still see the moon under the shadow, and there is still no red.

Had our total eclipse at 9:22 p.m. here in Illinois. What a sight. Dark red undertones. The really cool part is how the shape changed from it's usual flat, disk appearance to a 3-d sphere, due I suppose to the extreme shadows being created. Totally awesome. I hope the skies are equally clear for you "westerners" out there. Be sure to share your experience with the rest of us.
Happy viewing,

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

Nice. Completely red @ 10:45. Hard to find a good open spot through the trees here, but well worth it.
I love how these astronomical events make me notice that I'm standing on a big ball in open space.
