Some Bass Recorders are bent at the tuning joint, Yamaha is a good example of this. Usually in the key of F.
Bass Recorders have a great variation in sound from one brand to another - most of them have two to four keys depending on design.
My prototype bass whistle is in the key of 'C', (octave below low-C)
recorders usually called something in this range a 'Great Bass Recorder'. Between 4 and 5 foot tall.
what does a bass recorder sound like?

yeah, i'm gonna get the pocket sax tooMike J wrote:I noticed that, thanks. I was in the process of typing my initial reply at the same time Tony posted his link to the xaphoon. When I saw the link, I went and took a look. It looks pretty cool and sounds great. I may have to try out one of the plastic jobs (the pocket sax) and see how it sounds.chaudan wrote:the xaphoon has a 2 octave range

Hi Chaudan, I have a clip of myself playing a Shaw Low D on 'tinwhistle tunes'- http:// tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/new.html It was the first clip I ever sent in, a 'version' of the slow air 'Eanach Chuin'. Please excuse my lousy playing, nor is this a stab at self promotion( ) but it's the only clip of a Shaw low D that I've heard. They do take a bit of air,as you can probably tell, but I don't think that my breathing was as controlled as it is now when I recorded this.Shaws certainly have a sort of 'rustic charm'-I certainly like the look of them, even if I don't play the Shaw so much now.I look forward to comparing the Shaw to the Copeland Low D that I have on order-This should be quite interesting as they are both conical bore instruments. * No I couldn't manage that technical hyperlink stuff- just follow the site link from this board!
