"A pennywhistle ain't a flute."

To be pedantic, here is a classification of the various types of flutes, with examples. Note that the pennywhistle is type of flageolet:

Flutes (Flue Voiced) (Air column split by lip of of the instrument)
---Open Tube
------End Blown Single Flutes
---------Kaval
------End Blown Multiple Flutes
---------Panpipes
------Whistle Blown
---------Boatswains Whistle

---------Flageolet

---------Recorder
------Side Blown
---------Transverse Flute
---Closed Tube
---------Ocarina
---Keyboard
---------Organ

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Mmmm, But I don't pronounce "effect" and "affect" the same as each other.
Yeah - I like to think so too.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

You guys didn't get that, huh? It's a bit like Bush's War on Tourism. You can use missals for that too. Which is presumably why he also used an old-fashioned Christian term to describe the campaign.

Of course, (mis-)pronouncing "missiles" as "missles" may be an accurate reflection of expectations/performance.....

Tell us something.: Very much enjoy all flutes, bagpipes and whistles. I'm an older player; however, an active learner. I take current lessons from an Irish Flute tutor, a Boehm Flute tutor and a Highland Bagpipe tutor. I'm a great believer in lessons and without the assistance of a tutor, I find that I would be repeating the same mistakes over and over again, making me proficient in poor music.

It looks just like my Boehm C flute. Jems right, she is holding it correctly and just hasn't put it to her lip. If she is taking the flute pictured, there's, no wood in that one. The article does have a nice fuzzy feeling to it however.

Do you happen to know which whistle she took? Those of us over on the end-blown forum would like to know.
The Walrus

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Just an update:

We now have video of a flute in space!

I would have liked to see her play all 3 she brought though.
My Flutes:
James Galway JG3 Spirit Flute
Gemeinhardt 2sp Student Flute w/ Custom Series S Headjoint
19c Antique German Orchestral Flute - Huller/Lyon-Healy/Meyer 13 key - "Frankenflute"
Aulos A440 Grenser Traverso

Baroque, Classical, Trad - I play it all.

Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.
