New Piping blog/pod cast.
Hi folks,
I just started a weblog/podcast site of my errant piping. A few people (one in particular who I wanted to oblige) were asking me for a few pipes tunes on tape, so I've done it like this and all are welcome (at your own risk!)
The sound quality ain't great, I'll warn you in advance... but you should hear my wax cylinders.
I don't know how it'll go, but I hope it'll keep me on me toes and make me play the pipes a bit more!
Here's the URL:

Regards,
Harry.

Great Stuff there Harry, thanks, keep em coming. I think the recording sound is fine as it is it sounds more authentic than studio contrivance..

Re: New Piping blog/pod cast.
Lovely stuff Harry, the "Was that a high B, high A, B grace on A, trill...," and the deliberately unsolid hard D are very Ennis. Someone said here years ago you were going about on a project of completely emulating him, that would, like, rock. Also a back-from-the-dead job on Johnny Doran; why doesn't anybody ape these guys shamelessly? Too tricky to just play tunes on the things I 'spose.
Your audio is a bit tinny, though. Sounds like you're playing in a water tower. Not familiar with the sh*t Company's microphones but years ago I asked Kynch O'Kaine what he thought would make for a good cheap mic and he recommended the Sony ECM-MS907, which still does the job for me. I see you can still get them for ca. $75-90 USD. Bet we've had a mic shootout here at some point, too.
Have you really recorded cylinders, too? Have an Ediphone myself. Always ask guests if they want to lay down 4 minutes of muffledness. Not that it works. There's a guy in Portland who's a cylinder expert and I've thought about having him record me playing a Medley Of Irish Reels or the like. Or I could just find out how to filter a good recording to sound like something Chief O'Neill would have laid down.

Hi Kevin,
It's actually the 'microphone' on a skype headset. What can I say... the low tech and cheap-but-not-too-cheerful thing appeals to me in these recessionary times, and generally!
I think there's a filter in Audacity that can make it less 'water tower-ish', I'll check it out next go.
Regards,
Harry.

Re: New Piping blog/pod cast.
Might be a bit rate thing too. Or one of those codec deal 'ems. Somebody told me MP3s I'd made sounded really wobbly, lossy, etc. Well, nothing I've ever dubbed or recorded myself sounds like that on my machine, so I figure it must have been a problem on his end. Don't think that's what happening here though, since I always just keep loading codec packs until my computer can play everything...not the most knowledgeable about this stuff, which is really boring to me. Someone else might have some actual learned advice.

As they used to say, not bad for a flute player...

- Tell us something.: I play traditional Irish and Scottish music.

Very nice and I like the recording quality.

Love! And I feel much more kindly toward Bonnie Kate now, too. Thanks for the inspiration.

Re: New Piping blog/pod cast.
Hey, I EQ-ed the tracks and reloaded them up there, might be more listenable... or less damaging at least (I didn't want any passive deafness claims hittin me down the line. )
The little EQ feature on Audacity is actually great to use.
Regards,
Harry.
