I'm very sorry to hear that Peter Horan has passed away. A great musician and a very nice man. My condolences to his family and friends. We had some tunes with Peter and Gerry Harrington in the Central Hotel in Miltown Malbay 2008. It was the highlight of the week for us.

the evening Peter and I played tunes together remains a memorable one.
He'll be missed a great deal.
Thankfully there are a number of recordings ... audio and video ... that leave us with a longer-term presence of his music.

He was one of the living legends.

two memories of Peter:

first at my exam concert at UL back in 2000 - he happened to be about, and upon hearing I was a flute player, wandered straight down to the foot of the stage from where he'd been sitting, grabbed out his flute, and demanded we have a tune "Dublin reel: do you play that one?" Mick Moloney, Micheál, Niall Keegan and Sandra Joyce (the examiners) sitting there in the front row waiting for the exam to start - I wasn't sure, scared out of me wits - Peter couldn't have cared less - we played, was great craic and I needed it badly at that moment - and it put the rest of them in a good mood too.





Then going up to Dr. Gilberts in the Bronx after tunes in Manhatten (is it? or Yonkers, can never remember) around 2004 or 5: Peter and Michael Preston blasting away, Dana Lyn on the piano - got there after 1am - 3.45 or so more this lady comes up to the session who it turned out he was staying with:

"Now Peter, I'm going home now!"

"Ah, just one more tune."

"Peter Horan, you've been one more tuning me since 12.30, and I'm not waiting any longer."

*looks sulky grabs his 2/3rds full Guinness*

"Alright, well I'll just finish me pint."

*she, giving him a very long look, heads off back to sit at the bar*

*he waits a minute* (for forms sake, as it appeared) then:

"Michael, will we play this one?"





Remember him getting bodily put into a taxi after five in the morning at Mick Dolan's in Limerick too (by Mick himself if I recall right). The rest of us were knackered but at 79 or 80 odd, he was still driving the session along - "one more tune lads."

Ben, that was the best eulogy ever. Thank you! And peace to Peter and his friends and family. I know he'll be sorely missed. Meanwhile, we all better play hard and be good because it sounds like he'll play our fingers off if we're lucky enough to get to The Session Upstairs!
