Puke: A Linguistic Lexicon

Post by Doc Jones »

I have the stomach flu today.

Every one of my 15 kids (even the married ones that don't live here!) has had it in the past weeks. I have felt a little like a man laying on a beach watching a tidal wave approach...nowhere to run...nowhere to hide.

In honor of the event, I thought I'd start a thread on the various ways one can express "puke" in the English language. Maybe it could be a sticky.

Here's a partial list. Feel free to add.

Puke
Vomit
Throw up
Spit up
Regurgitate (not strictly correct from a medical standpoint)
Toss yer cookies
Hug the porcelain wishing well
Hurl
Barf
Spew
Retch
Heave
Talk to seals
Feed the fish (if barfing on a boat)
Cough in Technicolor
Upchuck
Ralph

Did I miss any?

Isn't "puke" supposed to have been a neologism coined by Shakespeare?

Yikes! If so, he should have been more careful! Is there a vaccine for neologism? :boggle:

My little brother's name is Ralph. He was a pro. That's the only term we use in our family.

Fine, then. I wanted to avoid a religious topic, but someone was bound to go there.

Speaking of The Crud and its accompanying ejecta, I recently found out that it's not the best idea to blow snot-rockets out of a moving car's side window, and this is all the more true when you're driving.

Relatively speaking, that is correct. An ant may easily lift a load many times its weight, but it still smooshes pretty easily with the right counter-force.

Just getting started, I am sure.

Blowing chunks. Staining your shoes. Experiencing a gastro geyser. Reconsidering lunch.

And I more often hear it as "worshiping at the porcelain shrine".

I was going to say "Calling to God on the big white telephone", which would be a combination of Big Davy's and ID-10t's suggestions.

Does "Antiperistalsis" count?

Oh, and the Irish one:

Boke.

Hawk, as in "Hawk up a wookie." The most commonly used word in this household: GERD. "Man! I had GERD last night like you wouldn't believe" "Must of been the tomatoes." :tomato:
