New Eb flute recording

Post by Mwalklate »

There's a new recording of a set of reels culminating with John In The Fog on youtube. They're played on a boxwood Eb flute made by Tom Aebi. The URL is:
www.youtube.com/watch?V-RVn7IRuhlwo&feature=channel

If that doesn't work putting Mat Walklate in the search box should locate it.

Thanks and welcome. But there's no link there, and a search just returns a bunch of stuff. How about a working link, so no one has to guess. Not sure I understand the reason for this post anyway.

Mat's just sharing, and it's a chance to hear one of Tom Aebi's flutes.

Mat is a harmonica/flute and God knows what else player, with a number of projects, including Irish traditional, blues, jazz, etc.

Here's a working link to Mat's videos:

There are other videos posted in other channels, search for "Mat Walklate" (using the quotes). Although you might find other genres.

Well, yes, since he did mention the tune name. You're making it way too easy.

I micro-reviewed a CD of Mat's a while back (Sept 09) for Taplas magazine...... (that's not a link to the review, which isn't available on-line, just to the mag's website) - as it was a micro-review, I doubt anyone will object to me pasting it here:
Cold In April: Mat Walklate KLATECD008 c62mins http://www.matwalklate.co.uk

Manchester based, Mat Walklate is a very talented player of flutes, whistles, uillean pipes and harmonicas. This delightful self-produced album is great value at 16 tracks/nearly 63 minutes. Material is mostly traditional Irish, a few self-penned tunes and a couple of songs. The supporting cast of musicians is excellent. Mat’s sense of melody and pace is well judged as are the arrangements. Very enjoyable. There’s a lot of multi-tracking to use/showcase his multi-instrumental prowess and there are a few lapses of synchronicity - and indeed a few places where lead instrument timing wanders a little and retakes might have been advisable, but these don’t detract significantly from a generally well done album. Most of the playing is technically exemplary as well as artistically tasteful and satisfying. This album’s worth more than a microview, really. Recommended.
(Disclaimer: I have no commercial interest here or any connection with Mat - don't think I've even met him at any Manchester sessions.....)

Welcome to C&F, Mat.

Have heard the 2nd, but will have to think about it. Maybe the "Guru" will get there first :)

Didn't take as long as I thought......

It's there as a reel, but I'm sure Willie Clancy has it recorded as a "fling".

Beautifully played Mwalklate, boxwood certainly has something about it, to my ears anyway, and Toms skillfull craftsmanship as well, I wonder do most accomplished players or not so accomplished have a boxwood flute in there gig bags, I have a few recorders made of box and apart from the sound, the color and feel of boxwood is very nice, prone to warpage I know, the few that come up for sale seem to sell quite quick like the recent Noy boxwood and amber, and I think there is a murray keyed up on ebay at the moment, both of which have warps.
