Identifying the bore...

Post by CelticMusicLover »

I'm trying to figure out whether the chanters used in the tune "Hymn of the Sea" (see link) are narrow- or wide-bore. The first chanter starts at 1:12 and the second one starts at 4:38. All I know is that the first one is in D and that the second one is in B. Anyone here with a trained ear who can hear what bore they have?

He's the guy who spends the entire party talking about his pipes.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

I don't have a trained ear, but I do have a trained bear, and he tells me that the first set is concert-pitch D, and therefore (sui generis) "wide-bore." It doesn't sound like a narrow-bore D.
The second set is, yes, in B, and therefore (sui generis) "narrow-bore." They may have fiddled with the pitch electronically, but not by much--you can usually tell by listening to the speed of the vibrato.

A trained bear is nothing but a trained ear in B.

Tell us something.: John McSherry total control, Davy Spillane tonal beauty, and Finbar Furey raw energy. Imagine them combined :)

Me too, but he only speaks Esperanto. Can't understand a thing of what he says. He's a damn fine cook though.

I was thinking in those lines as well. It doesen't sound as mellow as a narrow chanter would.

Are all B chanters narrow-bore?
