Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Just to add to the mishmash, there's the Rudall River National Park in Australia, and one source in an online discussion on the park said - and with some authority, I thought it seemed - that it's pronounced like "rue-DOLL". Yes, with emfossis on the last sylobble. In Oz, anyway. Nobody said anything about flutes.

1. This goes more towards jemtheflute's point on patterns than against it.
2. Your illustration, like many others illsustration, is premised on a universal pronunciation of the u in mud whereas in the native English speaking world the vowel varies. For instance, in many parts of the UK, mud is pronounced with a short oo.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Would that be pronounced "car", as in the late (I think) Deborah of that ilk? (Whistle a happy tune!)

Moi? Don't think so!

You neglected to link to the meaning of the phrase, rather than just of the word. And you also neglected to look at the particular useage in Scotland:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/of_that_ilk

p****t indeed! Ha!

Didn't need to - knew that! I just used it in its looser, extended, modern common usage sense.
Not only p****t but n***************r!

Back on topic..... George Rudall came from Crediton in Devon. Just try saying his name in either pronunciation in a broad Mummerset accent and see which sounds the more likely.

"George Rudall, my lover....." (Proper job!)
