Found...3 old GHB chanters

Post by patsky »

A friend found these Highland bagpipe chanters in an old trunk. Are they worthy anything?

The chanters are probably Robertson Edinburgh, Lawrie Glasgow, and MacPhee. It sounds like an interesting collection, but there is not much of a market for old highland pipe chanters.

I'd put the question up to the folks over at bob dunsire . com they'd know for sure.

I really like the sound of old chanters though.

I think they'd be worth something.

Maybe... But most of them wouldn't be in tune with the modern ones...

but you have to admit they still sound sexy.

i'm particularly curious about the Robertson chanter. I love robertson pipes, they are just beautiful drones to listen to.

The MacPhee chanter would be interesting to see. Peter Henderson (probably the best known vintage maker) took over Donald MacPhee's workshop in Glasgow when Donald MacPhee died young in 1880. The value on the chanters would not be high (around $150-$200 each, maybe a bit more), but they're still interesting. Vintage chanters play flatter than modern chanters, but the real problem is that to bring a chanter in tune, a modern pipe chanter is normally taped and often holes are carved a bit. It always seems a bit unwise to carve a vintage piece, but usually it won't play all notes in tune unless so adjusted. I think that's probably the main reason very few accomplished pipers will perform with one.
