Maybe I'm not using the correct title but I can't even find this one with Google. Can anyone either point me to a score for the English(?) hymn "Jerusalem" or give me the correct name so I can go looking.

Do you know any of the lyrics? First line? If so, try searching for that fragment instead. (Or one of us may know it with more information.)

About 3/4 down the page you'll find words and an mp3.

It's good, but it doesn't compare to Emerson, Lake & Palmer!

Try searching this site

http://www.episcopalnet.org/CHymnal/ACH/index.html

They have a search engine on this site to search their files and there was a few that came up when I typed in Jerusalem.

Edited to say: You have to have "Scorch" to use this site. It is a free download though.

I'm not really sure on the beginning. Its one of those songs where I always liked the tune without really knowing the lyric.

I do know the second verse goes more or less as follows:

"Bring me my sword of burning gold,
Bring me my arrows of desire,
Bring me my spear of thousand-fold.
Bring me my chariot of fire.
I shall not cease from then to fight,
Nor let my sword sleep in my hand,
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and fertile land."

It really isn't that difficult a tune, but there's one or two notes I can't seem to get.

Edit: Sorry, Tony and Kathy. I started to type this reply before you posted. Thanks.

That's it, alright. Is there any way I can turn a MIDI fle into a printed score? I know how to do it with an ABC but never tried it with a midi before.

It SOUNDS like it should play in D, but my tries are just a little off.

How did I know you were going to ask for sheet music?
I've been searching for the last 15 min and haven't found any... free
I bought some software last night that can read a MIDI files and print sheet music... however, I don't plan to install this until next weekend.

If that is what a guitar score looks like, I'm GLAD my hands are too small to play the things.

Tony, you've put an amazing amount of work into this - far more than it deserves. I thank you profusely. At this point, it dosen't even have to be free sheet music - I'm so frustrated I might be willing to spend (shudder) real money - within reason of course. But time enough for that tomorrow. If I go much longer, I'll be typing with my forehead.

Thanks again

Software to turn a MIDI file into a printed score is available at http://www.notation.com . You can use it 30 days for free, then it's $35. If you want to delete unneeded staves and just keep the melody staff, pull down the "tracks" menu and use "delete track." It will also play the tune for you at any speed you want and transpose into any key.

Best wishes,
Jerry

The words:

"And did those feet in ancient time,
walk upon England's mountains green,
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon those clouded hills,
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Upon those dark, satanic mills."

That's pretty close - I was singing it yesterday incredibly enough. It's actually based on the legend (fact?) that Jesus visited western England (Glastonbury and Priddy) before he started his ministry. If you go there the area is full of those legends.
Remember not to forget. Now, why am I here?

Here are the words in full:

And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

It is a poem by British Romantic poet William Blake as well as a hymn.

As far as the score goes, I wasn't able to find it on-line. I can tell you one sure source, though...if you can find a copy of the Hymnal of the Church of England (NOT the Episcopal Church Hymnal, which is what the Anglican Cyber Hymnal is based on, I'm afraid) it will be in there...it's considered one of England's national hymns. Another source...if you can find the music for the movie "Chariots of Fire," the hymn was used in that movie.

Here it is at Oremus, but only in Midi form, I'm afraid.

<A HREF="http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/a/a067.html">Jerusalem</A>

Still, it's a pretty easy tune to pick up by ear.

The tune was written by Blake as well. Clever bloke.

Thanks for adding the two missing lines Redwolf.
