Why? 20$ would by this college student several days worth of food. I already have a flute. Granted it cost me a lot more that 20$ but I'm happy with it. I don't need another one.

No need to get Mr. Quagmire involved. I'm primarily a singer and really only dabble in flute.

I think you need to think very carefully what you mean when tossing terms like "amateur" and "professional" in the context of folk music.
Sorry, I didn't mean to...ahem..."toss" anything! Yeah...I guess pro or am can be construed in quite a few different ways.

And thank you (and everyone else) for the warm welcome!

Over the years, I've played $3k Shakuhachi, $800.00 Shak, & $20.00 Shak from my teacher (as well as Yokobue, Bansuri, etc) and enjoyed playing them all to some extent. After reading some threads here, it just got me to thinking if others similarly.

Well, KODOAN, here at C&F you're bound to find a variety of opinions. However, you're also about to meet some dedicated flute players, too.

For instance, although I've played flute for many years, at C&F I continue to learn new things.

Again, welcome!

I like playing my $10 whistle. It's every bit as good an experience as playing my $700 flute. But I don't think a $20 flute will be as good as my $10 whistle. It doesn't seem to work that way with flutes. But I could be wrong.

Do you think we could come to a consensus of opinion on $20 whistles if we have such varied opinions on $20 flutes?

ciao,

E a proposito .. Perchè parliamo subito in italiano adesso? :o

Vabbè se proprio insistete mi ci metto anch'io a scrivere in italiano :D
Però così non ci capirebbe più niente nessuno...

Now that i think about it, my first flute was a bansuri in G# and i payed 20 euros for it. Is a really good instrument (great tuning) and i still play it sometimes, but only because is in a key different from D. If i bought a more expensive flute in the same key i don't think i'd play the bansuri anymore. I also have a bansuri in D and never play it (my lehart is much better  )
