Hats-Caps

Post by Ed Harrison »

I have a question:

Why do some uilleann pipers playing indoors out of the weather
wear a hat or cap?

Do you think they are wanting to make a statement?
Does it represent their personality?

I don't mean this as a snide question, no hidden agenda.
Just wonder why it happens?

When I was a Willie Week years ago, I asked the piping instructor what
type of music is popular in Ireland other than ITM. The reply was:

America Country Muisc
Cajun Music
BlueGrass

I thought, all in those groups wear CowBoy hats as it represents a little bit
of the culture from their music.

Soooooo.

Why do some uilleann pipers playing indoors out of the weather
wear a hat or cap?

Thanks ..... Ed

To keep their heads from exploding?

To better hear themselves in noisy situations? (The brim acts as a reflector.)

Hi Ed,

Hope all is well in my old stompin' ground...

As someone who's both follically-challenged and hard of hearing, I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those fancy straw boaters that you rarely see nowadays. It'd keep the sun off my bald head and create a reflector shield for the pipes.

Take care,
Dan

Pipers wear hats to stop the audience from focussing on the piper's groin - all the chanter and regulator action goes on in that general area.

Many a girl has been lead astray by the provocations of a piper's privates.

Uilliam and normal are not two words that would ever occur to me in the same thought.

She's rather attractive, and obviously very interested in you! Did you ask if she fancies a pint?
