I work in clinical research, running vaccine trials for a major pharmaceutical company. Before I got into this, I used to edit medical journals. My current job is a lot more fun.

On the side, besides playing my whistles and flute, I do a lot of Scottish country dancing, and teach it as well. I also got married in July (sorry ladies, he's taken!), so I'm enjoying that a lot. And my cat, George, also wants a mention. After all, he's the cat -- he knows that he should be the center of everything!

Spittin-in-the-wind, that sounds like pretty cool stuff you do. I used to work with S. cerevisiae in a previous life (when I was in school).

This is a fascinating thread! I'm another whistling academic ( I teach mostly Spanish & French when needed), married to a non-whistling (but very encouraging) historian. I have two teenage sons, one non-musical (but literary), one musical - saxophone & ocarina. Last winter I "borrowed" the Walton's I had gotten him the previous year, hoping we could perform duets with me on mountain dulcimer and him on whistle. He's still on the alto sax and I inherited an addictive new instrument. The Von Trapps have no competition.

Amar, I knew YOU would be the one who would come up with that kind of joke. Shame on you!

Well, I can't remember if I posted in this thread or not...and I am NOT about to re-read 22 pages to find out if I posted.

So, if I repost, shoot me. WAIT! I mean...send me your Sindt's! (All your Sindt are belong to me!)

Actually, I am a systems and web programmer for a nice company. I play tournament poker (Live not video), and I compete in martial arts and Irish dance. I play whistle, flute, piano, and long time ago trumpet. I am learning bodhran, and that's about it.

Oh yeah, I'm dating a wonderful lady

Hey Vandy, what part of Nebraska are you in? (glad you added that you're a night stalker at a grocery store  )

I can't remember if I posted to this one either. By day I'm a technical support specialist at a biotech company and by night an Andeanoldtimebluegrassfolk musician with a couple local bands.

I'm a "newbie" at C&F -- thanks for reviving this thread. It's fun to find out about others' interests, and especially so when we discover some non-musical interests held in common.

My paycheck currently comes from doing environmental research in a university laboratory. Recent projects have involved chlorination byproducts in drinking water, and the biodegradability of natural organic matter in tundra soils. In a previous career incarnation, I taught math to adults at the community college level.

I have two terrific kids, ages 12 and 8, a sweet, funny, bluegrass-fiddle-playing husband, and a dearly loved 10-year-old golden retriever. I noticed several folks here have terriers -- as a parent, I prefer goldens because I like to have someone around who unquestioningly accepts my authority! We had a lot of fun doing AKC tracking and obedience until my dog developed a health problem that forced her retirement.

I love living in Alaska. I enjoyed my years living in a house I built myself, hauling water in 5-gallon jugs and splitting wood (it sounds very Zen, I know!). I also enjoy my current life of middle-class luxury in a much bigger house with indoor plumbing and central heating. I still split wood for the sauna.

In February 2002 I got a lovely new hammered dulcimer and I'm still completely obsessed with learning music in general and the dulcimer in particular. I play in two weekly sessions at a local coffeehouse -- one Irish, the other a mixed folk/old-timey/Celtic. The only thing better than being part of some great music has been meeting the wonderful people making that music. It's really enriched my life.

Sarah, you're on the other end of my job. I'm a water treatment plant operator. We're currently doing a zillion dollar upgrade of our 3 treatment plants, adding ozone and lots of other stuff (the new construction will take years). And you're who we have to thank for all the research that resulted in this! It's cool to cyber-meet someone in this field.

This is quite interesting...but it's seriously taking away from whistling time! I wonder if I can hit the page down button while playing???
I have an M.A. in theology and have been doing congregational program ministry for the past ten years. Prior to that I edited legal-ese. But before any of that my first year out of undergraduate school I taught English as a Second Language in central Taiwan.
Now, I think I need to switch to a longer whistle!

Like Steven and a couple of others here, I work in clinical research (on the CRO end, for those of you who know -- we probably work with Steven's company, in fact!).

When I'm not managing an office full of employees looking into various diseases, I do these things:

--Play various aerophones (flute, whistle, dvoyanka, didgeridoo, horn, tuba, kaval, native american flute. . .)

--Juggle. A little too obsessively, according to my wife, who now tries to hide the knives. . .

--Grow bonsai and orchids. A little too obsessively, according to my wife, who now tries to hide the tiny trees. . . (nah: she loves it)

--Care for our two parrots (a caique called Elphaba, and a Senegal called Miles).

--Volunteer in animal rehab (primarily waterbirds).

--Go hiking, camping, kayaking, and birding.

--Read and write.

--Somewhere in there, I must eat and sleep, too.

--Ah, and Rowena: I'm married to a wildlife biologist who happens to bellydance professionally with an internationally-recognized troupe. She's got amazing abs, my spouse. I'm still amazed she said "Yes".
