No firm vacation plans now but in terms of dream vacations, I would like someday to go to Cuba and to Bahia, Brazil. Both are treasure troves documenting the clash of Iberian, African and indigenous American cultures. The attraction for me is mainly musical but there is so much more to experience - nature, cachaca, beisball, mojitos, y mucho mas. Officially US citizens are forbidden from travelling to Cuba but my wife and I both have non-US passports as well so we can fly to either Toronto or Mexico City and from there on to Havana. Don't know if it will ever happen but it's never far from our minds!

Hang on, are those 3 actually touring together in the summer or are you still on dream holiday territory here? If they are touring Sscotland then you need to start posting links to the details...
No, as far as I know there are no plans for the three of them to tour together! I know Julie and Jenna have been touring together but not Cara. I just mean that I'd like to see any or all of them, and if I could find a time when the 3 of them were touring Ireland and the UK at the same time (but not together, although it would be awesome if they did!) I'd try to go over then to catch them all.

If you come to Scotland then the TMSA website will give you info on festivals etc you might be interested in.

Given your list of female artists you want to see, you might want to add some more to your list

Anna Massie band

Emily Smith

Karine Polwart

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It689k1Ww80

Dochas (though if you like Julie Fowlis, you will probably have your eye out for them)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayDHtWvfNHU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDJxmrG_Als

David

Edited to add

You seem to like fiddlers, so this duo might interest you (they are not female however)

Thanks, I will check that website out!

That fiddler in the last 3 videos looks familiar...I think I've seen him playing with Julie Fowlis on YouTube. The 3 Dochas videos are already on one of my YouTube playlists. I'd definitely go see them live. I don't have their albums yet as I can't find them here in the states for a reasonable price but I think I am going to order them as I love Julie and Jenna's albums. I've heard of Karine but not Emily Smith or Anna Massie Band so I will check them out.

I knew that fella looked familiar. Here he is on one of my favorite Julie Fowlis songs. (Which, I might add, I've listened to enough times that I can sing along to the whole thing. Even though I don't speak Gaelic. :o :D )

Interestingly I've just found out that Cara Dillon, Karine Polwart and the also awesome Heidi Talbot (with John McCusker and Boo He...I can't spell his name) are amongst the excellent acts playing Stonehaven Folk Festival this year.

Think I'll be making good use of my parent's hospitality that weekend!

I was so blessed, I had so many dream-vacations already - most of them with almost no money, during summer-break within studying, such as:
- 6 weeks of camping in Brittany, changing place every 2-3 days - except for an entire week on the Interceltic Festival in Lorient (world's biggest celtic festival) - most wonderful folkdances (and everyone tries to include You!), awesome food, beautiful ;-) people, wunderfull weather - oooh, and the Cider! The CIDER!!!
- almost 2 months bus-touring/camping in Galice/Asturies - wonderfull music, great people, breathtaking scenery, great weather - oooh, and the Cider! The CIDER!!!
- 3 weeks Irish westcoast (skipping boring&crowded ring of Kerry, of course - except for the trip to Skellig Michael) - the Arrans, the Burren, Connemara, incredible Pub-Sessions in Galway, breathtaking Donegal - oooh, and the beer! The BEER ;-)
- 3 weeks of NovaScotia (well, that was CLEARLY after my studies - otherwise simply not affordable - took me a loooong time saving as well) - firstly a week in Halifax, then another two on CapeBreton. Good weather, breathtaking scenery, gorgeous wildlife (from hummingbirds to humpbacks), INCREDIBLY GOOD fiddlemusic, even MORE incredibly friendly PEOPLE (also forcing You into their dances ;-) ) - oooh, and the beer, the BEER!!! Let alone the whisky... :D

Most important is to have at least one person with me I really care about...
Actual plans: 2nd half July: two weeks in Brittany with friends&family - one week of celtic festival, anotherone on the cliffs at the sea.
Next year - if we find any way of financing it - another 3 weeks on CapeBreton ;-)

Sorry Cape Breton is closed next year, you'll have to stay south of the Causeway. I'm renting it for the whole summer.

Dream: A week of whistling with Brian Finnegan, off of Flook.

Oh, wait, I AM doing that - yippee.

Also going to Gozo, near Malta in the Med for a week - its very old fashioned apparantly.

A weekend with good friends in a tipi looking at the White Horse on Uffington, UK

Another long weekend of bushcraft in Wiltshire, cooking outside and learning all kinds of outdoor srvival skills. This is a great weekend.

Otherwise, working really hard this year, gulp.
Finally feel like I'm getting somewhere. It's only taken 6 years.

vacation this year: no, unfortunately not. but much needed (last vacation: 2000)

dream vacation: somewhere with beautiful nature for walks, lovely people, lovely music and top quality food and wines, and some kind of spa.
I get a strong feeling it's just across the channel......
maybe in a few years.

Did you ever go there? What do you think of this festival? Never been, but it looks interesting from looking at the website. As long as it's smaller than Willie Week, I can't stand the huge crowds anymore...

EDIT: I read a post from you on thesession.org from last year (thanks Google). 20+ students per class, yuck!

I checked this year's program on the web, looks like they are having 4 flute classes this year (instead of 3). Like I said on thesession.org, I enjoyed the class nevertheless because John Wynne was such a good teacher, and a nice fellow, and I really liked the tunes he taught us.

For my 1st stay in Drumshanbo in 2007, I made a mistake: I went there with my family who are completely uninterested in the art of diddley. So I just went to classes in the morning and spent the rest of the day with them, instead of going to sessions. This year I will travel with a group of music fanatics, we are going to rent a house together, and will certainly spend most of our time playing music, either in sessions or in our own group.

Maybe I will be able to give a report about the sessions in Drumshanbo in a few months.

Wow sounds fun. Any spare floor space in your house? :-) I don't think I could go, but it's nice to dream a bit sometimes...

Well, the one most of you know already: Israel this October.

Then there are a hiking/whistle summer school trip to Ireland, maybe next year and a trip to Canada in autumn one day when I have earned enough money.
