I think I'm going to turn the computer off, go play some whistle. Wrestle with the cats. . .Tyghre too. . .and go to bed. In the morning I'm going to ignore three threads and not even open them.

See ya on the weekend folks!

Sometimes, I stand amazed.

Disclaimer: this isn't a dig at anybody, so if anybody comes back mad at me, you might as well point it somewhere else and get glad in the same pants you got mad in.

That being said, this board is usually quite a friendly, safe, and sane place.

But on some nights (say, like tonight, for instance), if I had a child I wouldn't feel it was appropriate to allow them to access this board.

And I really think that's a shame.

C'mon folks, don't'cha think we can all do a little better than this?

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

Life isn't all nice, tidy and polite, neither are people. Since this message board is populated by real people, living in the real world, it's unreasonable to expect the sum to total more than it's parts.

I agree... I, for one, will refrain from writing "TAC" (encoded for your protection) on this board ever again.

Anyone remember this?
The Reasonable Person Principle is the rule which you must abide by when posting to the forums. Put differently, following the Principle is your obligation to your fellow community members.

The Principle was borrowed from Carnegie Mellon University, who use it as the governing principle for access to their computer systems; since it works for a whole University, we hope it will work for a message board with a few hundred participants.

From Carnegie Mellon University's own explanation of the Principle:

Everyone will be reasonable.

Everyone expects everyone else to be reasonable.

No one is special.

Do not be offended if someone suggests you are not being reasonable.

Reasonable people think about their use of these facilities, and the needs of others, and adjust their behavior to meet the goals of a common good for the community, i.e., expressing what you want to say, but accepting and accommodating the needs of others.
State of the world notwithstanding, we have agreed to conduct ourselves with some civility while exchanging ideas with people of similar interest.

Loren, I know where you're coming from, but let me offer a counterpoint: sometimes we get what we aim for. If we as a group expect the worst, it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. So, while you're right in one sense, I'd just say let's aim high.

This has been a strange night. I'm somehow sad tonight for the first time in a while...Nothing to do with the Board...just a strange night...

Goodnight all and we'll try again in the morning.

I, for one, agree to clean up my act by never using the words "recorder" or "accordion" again in public. Henceforth they will be known as "wood fippled fruitwood Baroque pneumatic tone generators" and "multi-reeded collapsing bellows". Ah... I feel better already. BTW, Phoebe Cates is a cutie pie also.

Yeah, it's that kind of night alright.

I think a storm is coming.
