Tyre retreader, Soldier, Farm hand, Cook, Manager, Kitchen hand, Security guard, Knife maker, Writer, and most recently part-time Logisticion (logistics) and full time dad to two beautiful girls. Variety is the spice of life, as the cliche goes.

Just sold a cabinet shop I owned for 5 years and currently looking for the next gig and volunteering with several local non-profits while job hunting (not an easy task these days), playing whistle alot and waiting arrival of a new flute. Before cabinet shop, 20 years in managerial positions in universities and non-profit. I thought going from that into a custom cabinet business would give me a break from dealing with people so much...well it was exponentially the opposite of what I expected, anyone who has done any kind of custom home improvements knows what I mean.... :tantrum:

5 years on from first answering this thread, I've been a maker of custom instrument cases these last few years, mostly for whistles and flutes.

If I were to follow suit and list all the previous day-jobs, we'd be three pages farther along before I finished!

Run my own little sole trader heritage interpretation service. Fortnuately my clients are agencies, NGO's etc. and not private clients or I'd probably be stuffed right now! It's great having much more control over things and you can choose who you work with.

Day job: part-time EFL tutor at Salford University.
Other occupation: slow travel writer (see http://www.fourpointsramble.org.uk)

Had lots of other jobs way back in the past, but they all predated my whistling, so irrelevant.

Observation from my day job: I've been intrigued at how similar learning, and improving on, the whistle feels to learning, and improving in, a second or subsequent language. Maybe not unconnected with the fact that the part of the brain that gives motor commands to the fingers is adjacent to the part that controls the tongue and lips?

Tell us something.: I'm just trying to update my profile. I need to change my location since I no longer is living in Sweden. I'm still playing the whistle though for the most time I'm just a lurker on the Chiff and Fipple board.

Day job: Geologist...

Ever since I started playing the whistle a year and a half ago I make sure to have at least one whistle with me wherever I go...

I agree with sackbut that learning the whistle is very similar to learning a second language and I believe that it actually makes it easier to improve on the other languages too.

Cheers,
Anders

Just found this thread. I'm a newly minted pediatrician. Before that, a documentary producer and station manager for a public television station in Ohio. Father of three boys, who've formed a band in the basement and are writing their own songs but also working on a rock version of Star of the County Down for dad...

(And, I just looked back through this thread only to find that I replied to it way back when I was a first year med student.
Well, at least I can say I made it.)
