Foot operated bellows?

Post by bobblee001 »

Im quite sure that back in the seventies I saw, on television, an uilleann piper using foot operated bellows. Did I imagine this or can anyone elaborate?

Maybe you "imagined" it - after all it WAS the seventies

Sorry I can't help with your question but I just had to say something!!
And it's whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason

Yes, that was he, and born without a right elbow. A local craftsman made up a foot bellows for him that was mounted on a piece of plywood, and he was actually quite talented, although he only played left handed tunes. He also played the regulators with his right knee, and had his mainstock turned 180 degrees for that purpose. It was reported that he had fathered 12 children, 169 sheep, and 27 cows.

The tenor reg looks almost as long as the baritone on his set. Did it have extra keys?

There is an additional key for E, same as on the Kenna set pictured on the cover of "The Drones and the Chanters" Vol. I.
