Bodhran tipper grips

Post by SilverStrand »

When I play my bodhran I have trouble gripping after awhile and the tipper starts to slip from my hand. Anyone have any tips as to what I can do help this? Are there grips I can slip onto the tipper? Thanks.

No expert I ... but a rubber band wrapped tight several turns around the middle or top of the tipper (depending on your playing style) makes a good grip.

A much more effective method (and kept very secret amongst that close-knit group of the most highly revered bodhrání) is the use of cyanoacrylate adhesives.

Here's a grip that needs no tipper.
1. face your thumbnail (as in look at it).
2. curl your index finger over the thumb (like a parrot's beak)
3. apply this to the drum by flicking your wrist.

It is a traditional Irish hand technique, ideal for accompanying softly, particuarly vocals.

Get a woodturner to make you a tipper to your specifications. including a notch at the appropriate point. Tony Dixon made one for me years ago when he used to come to our sessions in Bude. I'm very proud of it.

The lady who taught the bodhran class I took in
Columbia, MD would use a small rubber ring that's
usually used to castrate pigs.

It's just the right size, stays put, and is very thick
(and therefore keeps the tipper in place).

I'd be happy with that as long as it was in new, and not used, condition.

Depends on the style of tipper you use.
I usually have a more-or-less straight stick without bulbs at the ends http://www.bodhranshop.com/tippers/concertstick.html and I use foam pen-grips to hold it. I tried a small O-ring on my bone-shaped tipper to prevent it from slipping.

Yeah, that wouldn't be Kosher.

Mind you, I can think of a good use for that rubber ring on some bodhran "players" I've come across...

And not a single person suggested "vasoline" :boggle:

Yeah those rubber rings for de-raming sheep apear to be in use locally.
This came up in conversation a couple of weeks back at my regular session wehre one guy was explaining how to use them & how many lambs he'd done in a day :o
