I love rolling in dead stuff. It smells good.
No, no, no. You miss the point. It's a dog joke. "Hey, I don't smell like me anymore! HA! Fooled ya!"
It's like a kid wearing a hallowe'en mask. It's such a shame so few humans get the joke.
FACT: No matter how many walkies we've been on today, I want to go again. Now. (Doggie musings: What is a "day" anyway? And why do people have to put on different fur to go outside? I wear the same fur all the time - why can't they?)
FACT: It's fun to go bye-bye in the car - unless we stop at the vet.
Fact: I am queen of the world, all you other dogs in my family are allowed to exist at my whim. Look at me the wrong way and you'll feel the sting of my teeth. I'm so powerful you even call some of your females the same!

And eyes as gray as icicle fangs measure stranger

Your explanation is way better than mine: "the prey always ignore it when dead skunks sneak up on them..."
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')
Dog Fact:
Every dog is a lap dog.
Dog Fact:
The reason dogs don't like baths is because baths aren't a dog's idea. Swimming in a sewer hole. That's a dog's idea.

These are so very true. Though I would add that the larger the dog, the more they "feel" it their right to be a lap dog.
