Carrickfergus does it to me, for no reason or association that I can name. I'm not prone to goose bumps, but like Rhadge I get washes of heartrending nostalgia for... now here's the problem, there's no specific time or place or entity being evoked. Instead, it makes me suffer nostalgia for something which never existed, which in turn gives me a lingering case of cognitive dissonance. So I play it to enjoy being washed in nostalgic perplexity...Infernaltootler wrote:I know it's corny, but Carrickfergus.

Nostalgia without it being remembrance? When you mention it, I get the same thing when I listen to some tunes. Pretty weird feeling, but I won't complain about it because I like the feeling of nostalgia (which was considered a disease, when manifested among soldiers in 18th century or so).
These tunes are not traditional, so I won't drop their names.

I really like the pipe solo of Planxty's The Green Fields of Canada, and Lunasa's The Killarney Boys of Pleasure. Definitely goosebumps on both . There's probably more, but those are the first two that come to mind...
Re: Songs that give you goose bumps
Without a doubt the piece of music that has always given me goose bumps more than any other is Dance of the Gypsy Queen by Eoin Duignan. It's the reason I decided to learn to play the whistle in the first place. Here's a clip to make you thirst for more:

- Tell us something.: I'm just trying to update my profile. I need to change my location since I no longer is living in Sweden. I'm still playing the whistle though for the most time I'm just a lurker on the Chiff and Fipple board.

Re: Songs that give you goose bumps
There are wayy to many songs and no way I can pick one, also because its not so much the song, but how its played, and usually its just the first, mayybe second time as well that i'll get goosebumps. However a tune that stands out is lament for lost books, and sorry no youtube version of it, I do beleive its on the session.

"An T-Eilean Mu Thuath"
by John MacLeod of Leodhais. Featured on "The Blood is Strong" by Capercaille.
Not an obvious choice, as there's no whistle. However, it fulfills the OP requirement. I've recently started singing this in sessions, with acoustic guitar backing and adding two verses at the end on the low D. Loads of people have been coming up to me and asking me about this song. Unfortunately, its not on Youtube. The Capercaille version with Karen Matheson's superb vocals is just magical.
BS.

Alright you guys. I just stopped by to see what you were talking about these days and just blew an hour or more looking up these tunes. Always my favorite topic!
But the ultimate would be Lonesome Boatman played on a recorder!
(Will that push some buttons?)
