Burns Supper 2009 - for Chris and Davy

Our annual, local Burns event held in The Plough, Ley Green... our tiny country village pub. The same beloved home where all our musical foolishness occurs. This fine homage is organised and presided over by Kenny, an Ayr lad now living amongst Sasunnachs.

He's been doing this for donkey's years, but only for the last two as a formal sit-down do.

Kenny's a real Burns geek. After a couple of single malts he'll deliver a faultless Tam O'Shanter - full length - from memory.

It was a great evening, and I wouldn't ever miss it.

I had a fine load of haggis, neeps and tatties last night before watching some of the burns concert from Celtic Connections. Which just reminded me that I don't like Karen Matheson, but do quite like Eddi Reader.

When I was at Edinburgh University, I was a member of the Jewish Students Association. They were delighted to have goyim in their number.

At this time of year they would have a Rabbi Burns Supper, which was good crack.
They used to tell me that Kosher haggis was nicer than the regular stuff. Never noticed much difference myself. Vegetarian Haggis is really not as good.

I spent Burns Night with some of my family up north of Tulsa; the weather was highland-like. Except drier.

Carol Vorderman was controversially replaced on Countdown last year, haven't seen her on anything else recently but then I'm not really her target demographic.

Wogan is still on the odd thing but quit presenting Eurovision last year to be replaced by Graeme Norton.

Thanks, Buddhu, for posting the video of the Burns dinner. I haven't been around Scots in the USA that much, and I had never heard of the Burns celebrations on January 25th. I'm learning quite a bit by hanging around the online pub and keeping my ears open.

My first thought when I saw the platter with the haggis was, my God, look at that large sausage. After reading about how it was made, however, I think that I might be one of those that passed when it went around the table.

I hope you didn't mind the intrusion, but as the video was playing, I pulled up a chair at the table and made myself at home. The woman next to me who was clapping like crazy when Scotland the Brave was played on the bagpipes didn't even know that I was there. All I ask is that next time you let me know in advance, and I won't have to be a late arriver.

I haven't either. Almost went to a work one this year but never got organised to book a place.

We have one in The Tree Inn every year. The landlord is an amazingly-good GHB player (and all-round good egg to boot) and he pipes in the haggis beautifully. The haggis in question is McSween's, of course, and if you're squeamish you will avert your gaze so as not to espy the sphincter at one end of the disconcertingly-genuine bladder. The evening is fully-booked permanently, and you probably wouldn't get in in 2010 even if you tried! I have a permanent arrangement for six people, my wife and two of her friends and myself and two of "the lads." The latter trio is there to play tunes. We three get the haggis supper thrown in, free beer and a small consideration that pays the fares. Our only problem is that we have very few tunes that sound overtly Scottish, but we get away with it by playing them early on and then relying on the fact that, by tennish or so, few people will be so discriminating as to spot the increasing Irishness! We have an old Scots lady who used to be the music teacher at the secondary school and who is a national treasure, and she does the "grace", the Burns poetry and the ceremonial stabbing of the beast with great aplomb. I reckon we do it proper!
