You may also want to find out if a full mat is desired or a shorter head to hip mat.

A bit of old corrugated cardboard does just fine, and you ain't gotta spend no $30 neither.

Their current selection of pads is very limited, but they have one made by Pacific Outdoor Equipment that's within Dale's specified budget, and another by the same manufacturer that's just a bit over his price. I've never used a pad from POE, so I can't speak as to their quality.

STP's stock seems to turn over frequently. I'd check back every few days or so.

Campmor usually has decent prices on products and usually have a good selection, too.

Ok, good. I'll get my daughter a cardboard box for Christmas.

I like the fridge boxes the best, but I broke down and got a flatscreen TV yesterday I think if the box is cut correctly it could be used for two pads! I would just charge shipping.

Dale - I was just at Wal Mart and they have a Coleman inflatable mat for just under $30. Coleman is a decent brand, and it will be the same quality no matter where you buy it. KMart might have some too. I don't remember the brand of the mats we have but I use one on top of the Coleman inflatable mattress in the back of the van and it's comfy.

Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. Right now, I can't think of "something" to tell you. But I have to use at least 100 characters to inform you of that.

Hereyou go, Dale. This is what I use. It doesn't seem like much, but it really does take out the bumps, and it's very compact, light enough for backpacking.

It is very rare to find these this cheap.

Thanks to all. Great advice. I think I'm going with the Thermarest.

Maybe it will come in a cardboard box.

I have used both the closed cell non-inflatable foam mats and the open-cell inflatable ones. I prefer the inflatable ones because they compress better and being inflatable that can have more cush when you need it. The foam is important for insulating. My non-camping husband found that out out the hardway when he insisted on using an air-matress in the winter. I believe that was the last time he camped. My first inflatable foam pad was a Coleman from Walmart purchased for under $30 10 years ago and it worked just fine. Still does.
