Ronaldo Reyburn makes a lovely low D.

They are making diatonic shakuhachis in D in some places now. Thats what I'd have.

Hmm, if I could choose any low D, I think I'd want the new Sweetheart "pipers grip" model.

My first low whistle was an Overton Low D, bought some years ago. But since I was so lucky to get a Copeland brass Low D it is my favorite. They are very different soundwise and I prefer the more flute-like tone of the Copeland.

I voted for a Kerrypro low D

I've got a Kerrypro Low F which is a lovely whistle
and would love a Low D :)

A few Low D thoughts. ALL IMHO, natch.

Easy-handlers.

Burke Composite. Humble, woody sound. Comfortable.
Burke aluminum Viper. Pleasant, clean sound. Light.
MK. Brilliant whistle! Balanced in most sought-for characterstics.

Big Boys.

Copeland. Big brassy resonance. Harder, for me, to play.
Burke Brass Viper. Wonderful diffused resonance. Beauty!
Reyburn Wide bore. Too big, for me, but what gorgeous sound!
Overton. Too big, for me, but fabulous sound.
Chieftain Gold. Mellow fog. Massive. Too heavy a load, for me.
Good luck. There's a wealth of great Lows out there!

Thanks to all who participated thus far!

I'd love to order each of the ones suggested, as I know they are all good ones, but I'm asking for an Overton this time. Santa has the stats, now he has to make good on the threat. :D

Copeland brass would be my choice, although my easy reach Colin Goldie Overton is stunning to play.. plus I don't have a Copeland!

Had an MK briefly and really liked the sound. However, the intonation was out and surprisingly the maker refused to take it back for free adjustment, saying that it was obviously the way I was playing it. Needless to say, I won't be buying any further MK's!

Sweetheart Resonance. No question in my mind. I've had 4 low D's, and played three others, and the Resonance is the only one I need or want to have any more.

I've gone with the Overton, since I've got one.

Interestingly (perhaps) when I got it couldn't play the low D note and struggled to get much of anything out of it to my great disappointment as I had been looking forward to this Christmas 'surprise'.

Since Christmas 2007 I have lost two stone (28lbs) in weight and also practised a lot of regular D whistle and now my fingers are no longer so fat I can make the stretch more easily and get a lovely sound out of it.
Finally feel like I'm getting somewhere. It's only taken 6 years.

I suppose you would if you put it in your mouth instead of fudge.

Now you mention it I think whistling has helped me loose weight because it gives me something to do instead of eating. It's an oral fixation thing.
