I would go with the Copeland. IMHO one great whistle is as good as any other great whistle. The benefit with a Copeland is that I could tell all the non-whistlers, "This is the same whistle used in that Titanic Song." That, they'll understand and appreciate.

Copeland gets my vote
OK...so I havn't played 'em all but I've played a bunch and the Copland to me is the sweetest of all. How did this not get listed in the the poll? If I really got my wish someone would insist on giving me a Copleland Low D that turned out to be the one that was stolen from Seamus Egan. Of course it would make me very happy to return it ti it's rightful owner!

Re: Copeland gets my vote
I didn't include it because I believe it is out of the price range. Maybe I'll check that again. And they are not easily found now.chef Paul wrote:OK...so I havn't played 'em all but I've played a bunch and the Copland to me is the sweetest of all. How did this not get listed in the the poll? - Tell us something.: I'm just updating my profile. Actually came on to change my signature, which is out of date. I have no idea what 100 characters looks like. Is this enough perhaps?

Though possibly tricky to get, at least quickly, I would make a case for one of Misha's whistles. For all around ease of playing, volume, responsiveness and quality of sound I think that the MKs are really splendid - I've even gone with mine ahead of my Copeland, fond though I am of the Copeland's lower range. Once the MK is warm, it runs evenly all the way up through the second octave and doesn't require so much driving above the high G that it becomes shrill or suddenly very loud. It also has a reasonable easy cover for those without huge hands. If you don't know exactly what you want already (that is, if you aren't sold on the sound of an Overton, say), the MK has both eveness and character (more in my opinion than a Burke), and is very responsive, and I think that anyone without a fixed opinion to the contrary on the sound they wanted would be, insanely, deliriously, happy with one of these. Not that it is important, but nice colours too (only the Copeland looks better to my eye).
Cheers,
Ben
I would also add that it is the best whistle I've ever played in terms of its dynamic range - you can play it softly or really drive it and it sounds lovely both ways.

Was looking at Doc Jones' website and saw a Reyburn low D. (Hmmm, guess it's sold -- sorry.) Haven't played the low D but his low/mezzo G has a fantastic tone. Suspect the low D would be comparable.
Thought you might like one more whistle (which is probably within the price range) tossed 'in the ring' ...

Probably out of your price range, but, given the initial premise...... absolutely a Jon Swayne wooden one to go with my boxwood high D.
I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day.
Give a man a whistle, and you scare away all the fish and make him order Chinese take-out.
Or something like that.
