I still collect sticks and string. When I was a kid, I built a really big kite and put it out on a factory sized spindle of string that my Dad got from his tractor trailer deliveries. The local airport sent a helicopter to check it out. The helicopter got close enough that the wind turbulence made the kite move. It took hours to wind the string up.

A Stick!?!

Oh we only dreamed of having sticks!

Why when we were kids we had to use our shoes as toys which was difficult as we only had one each not a pair and even that had to be shared among all us kids.

We were happy to have it too, I tell ya!

oh yeah - dirt - how could I forget dirt.

When Nate was a year old, we were doing some landscaping and got a load of top soil. We had remnants of the "dirt pile" for many, many years - no whimpy sand box for my kids! When Nate was 2 my next door neighbor got a load of top soil - and we when pulled into our driveway, Nate yelled "Oh, mom, look - Char bought me dirt!", ran and got all his Tonka trucks and was in hog heaven. I used to have to hose him down at night to tell if he was the right kid to bring in!!!

When Noah was 3 or so, Nate (now 7) dug a hold big enough that Noah fit in it standing up (thank god we have clay soil and it didn't collapse!!).

How could I forget dirt!
