Hi

Looks like I'll have an unwelcome guest tomorrow and Thursday:

Heading right for me! I set a second anchor today, and removed or lashed down everything that was loose on deck.

This is where I am. (Use the satellite view.)

Do you stay aboard for something like this, or take refuge ashore?
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

I'm staying onboard. Can't do much to keep the boat safe if I'm on land. I lost a boat with everything I owned two years ago in collission at sea. I can't afford to loose this one. Anyway, where would I go on shore? All my friends live on boats.

Prayers going out for you. The power of wind and water when experiencing them firsthand is truly fearsome and I've only been on the Great Lakes....

Thanks, but not just for me, I hope. This thing is going to pass through the chain of islands somewhere in this area. If we don't get hit, someone else will, so please pray for everyone.

Batten down and be safe!
May you all come through at least relatively unscathed!

Folks, this is serious! And, as an estimate, this is approximately at the time when the hurricane could pass by Owen's boat!

From Reuters, 12:34 am EDT, 16 Oct 08, by late Wednesday evening hurricane Omar had increased to Catagory 3, with sustained wind of near 115 mph.

Update: 01:17 am EDT, 16 Oct 08, hurricane Omar now has sustained wind of near 120 mph.

From his position indications, the storm looked like a direct hit or nearly so. I saw some video from there on the tube and it wasn't good. Owen, are you still out there?

Owen, hope you're OK.

Next time buy some boat insurance and head for high ground and decent shelter. Yikes!

Long story short, I've been following the news, and so far it seems that the damage to St Maarten, where Owen is, could be minimal, with only a few wooden buildings by the shore blown down, and with no reported loss of life, thank goodness.

Nearby, in the US Virgin Islands, however, apparently several boats were sunk, with so far no report beyond that.

Hello, Owen?
