carrying case

I am finally satisfied that I can play my low whistle in public. I am only apprehensive for I have no case or traveling bag to protect my instrument from the tomatoes and cabbage offered for my performance. Does anyone know of an outlet which sells cases or bags for a low D whistle? Bubbles.

Geez, Don't you people want to make anything for yourselves?

I only said that, because I've been thinking about knocking up a leather case to carry my low D, bandolier fashion across the back. I'm even giving some thought to making a roll case for my smaller whistles, that will also attach to my belt with whistles rolled and tied into place.
I don't own a car (Motorcylist) so it is far easier to attach things to my person when ever possible. I should really just make a specialist bikers vest to carry all my whistles...
Hmmm. Micks Whip's, Whistles and Weird biker garb...Business idea's being tossed about in the great vacuum of my own head...

Trouble is Mick, with a demanding job and family, plus time to practice my music, I don't have time to divert into other interests. I guess in this respect I am like many people who use this board.

One of my gripes is that there are very few suppliers of reasonable and durable cases. It seems they are happy to take our money for flute, clarinet, oboe cases - but not for low whistle. Perhaps it is as one music shop in my area suggested - "I don't really think of them as musical intruments - they are more of a toy really."

Of course you have check out annie's work at http://www.angelfire.com/mo/sassafrassgrove/ I've got one of her standard low whistle cases and it is great. She's done quiver type carriers in the past I'm quite sure. Ask her about what you need and see what she offers.

I've looked at various whistle cases offered for sale . . . but when I made my own low tech low d, I wanted to protect it. Just a little bump was likely to knock the fipple or fipple cap out of position. But really, did I want to spend that much on something I had maybe 2 bucks in? Not that I don't like it . . . I'm kinda proud of it.

So, I remembered some old plastic leather look upholstry material I had that I had bought dirt cheap, and I had a lock stich awl I had bought at a Tandy store, and set down sewed this long, narrow bag just the right size for a low d whistle that looks like it is made of black leather. Now, the stiching could have been better, but it is pretty good for a first try, and it will work. I did this while watching TV . . . took an hour or so.

I really think I only paid about $4 for the peice of upholstry material . . . and it was origionaly about 6 foot square. Not a bad deal. You may pay more, but plastic leather look material is much cheaper than leather and heavy enough to offer some protection.

If you havn't done anything like this, you sew the peices together inside out . . . with the surface you want on the inside on the outside. Then turn the whole thing inside out and it hides much of the stiching. Even if you are a bit uneaven, much of that is never seen.

What about hard cases? I'd love something for my whistle that would keep it from getting ruined if it were, say, stepped on. I'd be wearing the case on my belt at medieval-ren reenactments, and stuff you take to the camps has to be hardy and tough. I have a semi-hard leather case I stitched up for my dragon whistle.

Dragonwhistle, you could use a piece of PVC pipe inside the leather. There are several grades of PVC. You probably don't want the Schedule 40, which is pretty thick and heavy. I use the thin wall pipe. (Sorry, I don't know it's name or number). It's plenty strong and lightweight. I use it to carry my hi-D whistles all the time and don't bother with an outer covering.

I would 2nd the PVC tube idea, but I would cover it. I like to work with leather, but cloth would do just the same given that a nicely patterned piece could be had. Sew the material into a tube to fit firmly around the PVC (don't forget the base.) design in a belt loop either by adding one into the material used or maybe just slot the PVC to suit. If the material tube is a little loose on the PVC you could try adding a light coat of glue to the PVC outter and slide the material tube into place to wait for the glue to dry.
My personal tastes would be to just use some heavy gauge leather, make it into the case, give it a boiling wax treatment, wipe it down, let it cool and dry. Not as hard as the PVC but more true to the medieaval theme, and if it's on your belt it's not likely to be stepped on, unless your really really short

I've toyed with the idea of clustering PVC pipe together to hold a selection of whistles. Big pipe down the center for a low D with smaller tubes around the center for smaller whistles. Attach a couple folding legs and you'd have a tripod that would hold the whistles up and allow easy access to all of them. Biggest drawback I see is that it might look a bit like a rocket launcher!

Your local hardware store carries spray paint made especially for PVC. Apparently, lots of other handy folks are making things from PVC pipe. The paint comes in a variety of colors and sticks and wears well.
