This is slightly OT but has anyone considered making a conical tube from carbon fiber fabric and epoxy over some kind of a reusable mold?

Mr.Nate,
It's been done on a prototype Uilleann chanter.
There's shrinkage with resins. Not much, but it has to be considered. So does the toxicity both in the fabrication and playing. A non toxic coating must be applied to the finished product.

Thanks Tony for the info! I was thinking about a solid Delrin mouthpiece that incorporates the tuning slide like an O'Riordan! I don't think the epoxy will be too toxic once cured out. I use Devcon two-tone quite frequently in my guitar repair work.
Cheers,
Nathan

Daniel_Bingamon,
Could you elaborate a little more on Dave Copley's reamers so that I can get a little clearer of a picture of what you are describing?
Thanks,
John

Anyone here into 'filk'? Anyone else know the inside story on The Stardrive?....

Oh, never mind....I'm going back to rereading about blackpipes laid on hot brick and how to make a reamer.

And there is NOTHING sexy about epoxy, guys.

Tyghress, the sexiness of epoxy is in knowing how, where, and most of all, WHEN to use it!

... think about it ...

Check out this link, found on the Musical Instrument Makers Froum (MIMF)
http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web ... ethods.htm

This fellow has made a polyester oboe, etc. Terrific workmanship.

Serpent, your comment on the erotic uses of epoxy chillingly recalls American Pie 2...

I think that you have been mis-informed. Delrin in pretty inert at the temps developed during it's machining (and as a more imperical proof, I'm still alive  ).

This is not entirely on topic, however, here is a link to a wonderful article by Casey Burns on his method for producing cylindrical bores. (Some of the same techinques apply)
