syllables
As you normally hear it said, how many syllables are in temperature?
How many in comfortable?
How many in iron?
How many in mire?
How many in squirrel?
How many in whirl?
Just an informal survey.

This would be normal, casual, conversation, during which I'm not particularly enunciating. (this is how I would speak. I hear others, sometimes, add more syllables.)
Iron and mire come closest to escaping the unisyllabic slur. But they still don't quite qualify as 2.
background: Mid-Atlantic, but with 2 Virginian parents.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and live in West Virginia. I have to say that even the locals would probably have a dickens of a time understanding each other say "whirl." That could be "we'll", "world," "where will" "where we'll" or maybe even some guy named "W. Earl."

Rose tint my world. Keep me safe from my trouble and pain.

Naw. (Or perhaps I should say nay-eee-oh.) I think what I got is Baltimore slurs on a platform of southern pronunciation.dwest wrote:I can't recall actually hearing a single syllable word when I have been in southwestern Virginia.
