Good freeware antivirus program?

Post by brewerpaul »

Hi-- since we got Roadrunner and cancelled our subscrition to AOL, they are no longer updating their free McAfee security suite that they formerly provided.
I uninstalled it and installed a free suite from Roadrunner (CA suite)but it has slowed down this computer miserably.
I think Road Runner has a built in firewall, no? I already have anti spam programs, so all I really need is a good antivirus program.
Anyone have any favorite freeware ones?Other advice? I'll need to install it on 3 computers, btw.
Got wood?

I use and like Avast Antivirus. It's free, robust, frequent updates, nice interface, and runs on every Windows platform back to Win98. The company is based in the Czech Republic.

The other very popular free AV program seems to be AVG:

I use this one, too, with apparently good results.

I've used avg for years, but the newest version is awful bloaty, and seems
to have more of an impact on my system. I think I'm going to have to try
Avast!

I use Avast, too.
It is stable and does auto-updates regularly.

The only downside is that is makes people talk like 'kin pirates.

Is it true you're not supposed to have more than one anti-virus program? I think I read somewhere that running two would cause conflicts of some kind.

So, if I already use AVG and decide to try Avast, should I remove AVG before running Avast?
Every time I turn around, I wonder where I've been.
Time to stop turning round, I guess.

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

I used to use AVG but when I recently wiped my hard drive I asked around and people told me that Avast uses less resources. I like it so far, except that I think the mnaual scan interface is a little more difficult to use. But in auto mode it's pretty seamless.
