Well Bob........

I would be willing to help out.

I think we need to get together and come up with a plan first.

Maybe we could have an informal get together with all the finest SF area pipers and see what can be done to put together a really well organized Tionol.

Give me a call or email me and we can set up a time and place to meet up.

I really feel our biggest problem is that living in California, we are all so spread out in distance, it is difficult for all of us to get together on a regular basis. Anywhere we meet, someone has to travel at least 50 miles it seems.

I live in Los Gatos now. C.B. Hannegan's pub is a block away and they would be more than happy to see a bunch of pipers drop by.

I have a lot of ideas I would love to share.

I was just kidding about being shot at!

Cheers! Richard

Allright folks, its time we have a serious meeting and "fish or cut bait."

The next "Sunday go to Meetin'" SF Irish Pipers club meeting is to be held at my place on Sunday October 12 at 2PM.

We can discuss these and other topics as well.

Generally speaking, Feb is not a bad time to host the tionol here in he Bay area. However, this is up for discussion. Do you want fog...then July or August. Sunny summerys skies....then September or October. Nice predictable not to cool or too warm weather....then Feb thru April. May can be nice, foggy, or too hot. Very unpredictable. Rain storms to put west of Ireland summers to shame...then December or January.

Participation is key. Come one come all.

I have no problem with going to Los Gatos to meet on occasion.

Hi Richard,

Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut since I am not really able to participate in the club much right now, but as far as I know, money is not the issue at all.

The main issue as I see it is that nobody is available to step up and help plan anything. Of the people that have helped plan in the past, seems like only Bob and Ted are able to volunteer their time right now. Which makes it pretty difficult to plan any sort of event when there are so few people to plan it! But I'm sure if you can help out that would move things along.

I know everyone would love to have a good event with lots of activities and a great venue, but that takes a lot of time and effort to put in place, and I'm not sure the club is going to be up for that this time...But even if we don't end up having a full-fledged tionol this year we will still have a great time! Cause everyone knows we always have the best party tionol around. ;-)

Howayez? I'm getting to this a bit late... listen... the most important thing is to keep it fun. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about? (I know education too.. .that'll happen naturally don't be stressin!) It isn't brain surgery. You can steal the timetable off the SCUPC site if you like, just swap out the names, it seems to be a decent standard format to run off - http://www.socalpipers.com/tionol_2008_autumn.html

For me Presidents Day weekend is perfect, rotating corporate vacation day and all that.

Richard... you have spoken... it is your time.... shine little star.... happy hands.... and bow.

Hey Paddy,

You mean like "SUPERSTAR"?

But seriously now folks...I think one of the main problems with the SF Club is lack of membership.

I don't know what the membership is now, but meetings only draw about 5 people (at least the last one I attended), which is fine, but the more the merrier.

We are also so spread out that finding a convenient location far all to attend is really difficult.

Howzabout a Tionol in Los Gatos? I could talk to the locals and maybe find a venue. Los Gatos is a beautiful village nestled next to the Santa Cruz mountains and has a very Victorian flavor. Also a great Irish pub.

Also we need a killer teacher to draw people in. Maybe Liam O'Flynn :) or.....Patrick D'Arcy!!!!! I bet we could get him cheap. What say ye Paddy?

Let's discuss at the next meeting perhaps.

Cheers! Richard

FWIW I have attended both of the last two tionols (Leo Rickard , Mickey Dunne) in Berkeley and found them to be well organised, Informative, in a great location/ home with a wonderful venue for the concert.
I am looking foward to this year's gathering as I know there are some good people up there that will again put together another great tionol.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Yes, me too. San Francisco and Seattle are the benchmarks we learned from. Our monthly meetings here in So Cal are attended by a handful regularly and then a few that come and go. That's what it's supposed to be. It's not supposed to be tionol numbers every month.

I think you're airing out your dirty laundry. It think I'd rather not see it.. or smell it.

Why are my ears burning....

I think Los Gatos or Santa Cruz would be brilliant. Call me a traditionalist, but I like keeping the President's Day Weekend.

As has been said, it's not rocket science. Here's how we divide things up in SoCal:

Gabriel: Venue, housing, hospitality.

D'Arcy: Contacts for teachers (the golden Rolodex), publicity and web magic, scheduling.

Me: Financials, travel arrangements, registration and admin.

Victor: Drink!

That and another three or four "go to" guys you can count on for various tasks that come up, and you're all set.

Focus on getting the job done and don't worry too much about being "fair" to everyone (this will be hard for your NorCal types).

If want a little help from down south, just ask.

Maybe you all could show up at our next meeting? That would energize things!

All the suggestions are appreciated. Hopefully we can still pull something together that will be fun.

Besides the lack of organizers that Justine mentioned, the big problem is venues. We got a late start planning this year and the Freight and Salvage (where we've held concerts for the last few years) booked other shows for President's Day weekend. We either need to find a new concert venue, move the tionol to a different date, or skip the concert. Money does come into the matter because we've paid most of our expenses the last few years from the concert revenue.

We were also hoping to find a larger venue for the classes, but so far no one has had time to work on that. Most of the good venues are expensive,

Los Gatos would be interesting. We'd need to find someone (Richard?) to host a party nearby....

OK, so I have contacted our local Catholic Parish here in Los Gatos to see if they would host the Tionol.

Sort of like St. Benedict's in Seattle where they have held their Tionols.

I will let you know what the response is as soon as I receive one.

They have a huge hall and classrooms that would be perfect if they allow us to make us of them.

I am thinking the concert could be held in the hall. It has a large raised stage and a large capacity.

Also, the local pub, C.B Hannegans might be able to host a party. I will be asking them this weekend.

Los Gatos, for all of you who don't know, it a very upscale (meaning wealthy) small village at the foot of the Santa Cruz mountains with loads of restaurants and things to do.

It is in the heart of the famous Silicon Valley as well.

More updates later as I hear back from these venues.

Thanks for all of your inputs so far.

What dirty laundry???

Cheers! Richard

Just remember your history- the post mark on this was July 1977. I was there and I think Ted was as well. I can hear Denis saying "sylvan glade". There wasn't any Zachary's pizza however.
