Snoring!
So.....
It looks like I do snore. After almost 30 years of marriage I have to admit that the little lady is right. Darned if I haven't been waking myself up at night lately.
Anyway, it wouldn't be so bad except she doesn't complain, she just quietly moves to another bedroom in the middle of the night if I get too "boisterous." I don't like that.
So I'm looking for the cure. Is there one? I've tried the nose strips. They open up my breathing but don't stop the snoring. Any suggestions?

I am a happy CPAP apnea guy. I've had surgery twice to shorten up the 'ol soft pallet but still use the CPAP (though the need is much less urgent)tansy wrote:check with your doc to see if you may have sleep apnea, I've got it really badly and have been on Cpap for 7 years, don't snore or stop breathing when on the machine, good luck.
Do any other of you have the cursed apnea?

I'd also agree that seeking a professional opinon on the possiblity of sleep apnea is sound advice.
Your wife will like the white noise of the machine. Mine can't sleep without it. Besides, it's really romantic...sort of like sleeping with Darth Vader.
OK, maybe not, but it's a heck of a lot more romantic than having her in the other room!

I've been using a CPAP for the last four years or so. It looks like something out of a medical fetish p0rn movie, but my quality of life has improved tremendously. I sleep a lot better (not waking up every five minutes is bliss), and it makes me much better company.
Rodfish, definitely do talk to your doctor about having a sleep study and seeing what options are available to you. Sleep apnea can be life-threatening if it's severe. Has your wife noticed your breathing stopping?

I don't have sleep apnea (that I know of!), but I am a registered sleep technologist and treat it. If you're waking yourself up at night, I'd definitely suggest you get checked out via sleep study.
I can talk to you more about it if you want, but just send me a PM so we don't violate Dale's medical posts rule.

I've tried a CPAP, but couldn't get used to it. Though lots of people have zero
problems with it (particularly if you sleep on your back, I'll bet). Go talk to an
Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor or sleep specialist. The doctor will probably
have you do a sleep study to see how your apnea and/or hypopnea stands.
I ended up having an LAUP (Laser Assisted Uvula Palatoplasty) procedure,
wherein the doctor cut off part of my uvula and shaved off some of my soft
palate with a laser. I was awake at the time, and the local anesthesia worked,
but given my druthers I probably would just have done it under general. It
was not a pleasant experience. When you can't feel yourself swallow, it makes
your body think that you can't swallow, and that triggers your gag reflex.
Also, the recovery period was unpleasant. I would not recommend looking
into this until you've tried other things. It reduced the snoring dramatically,
but a CPAP is sufficient for most people and doesn't involve cutting your
mouthparts with a friggin' laser.

Hey all:
Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure I don't have apnea since I rarely wake up at night. It's just that I woke up the other night with that snoring sound echoing in my ears so it gave me an idea what my wife has to listen to once in awhile.
And actually, it doesn't bother her every night or pose that great of a problem, but I thought, hey if there's a cure or remedy for snoring maybe the good folks at the C&F will know about it.
I have a good friend with apnea and he has to sleep with the CPAP, but I haven't been experiencing the symptoms.
Maybe I'll buy her some earplugs for her birthday. Nah.

My dh use to snore so loud that I couldn't hear tv at night on the other end of the house. Imagine getting use to sleeping with that going on in your ear all night. He had to have surgery years later for nasal polyps. Now, if his snoring gets bad we know it's time to see the ENT.

not sure the bear was scared....there were 3 of us, separate tents
I was asleep and noticed something making a similar noise about a forth below me.....I dropped an octave.....bear went to check the other two tents
(yeah, they were both fully awake/aware)
(yeah, not amused.....go figure)
I had to ask them the next morning if it had really happened, as I never did fully wake up.
