So... I'm assuming the cat is mum on this whole thing... you know... inter-species dating isn't nearly as frowned upon in some areas ...

- Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. Right now, I can't think of "something" to tell you. But I have to use at least 100 characters to inform you of that.

Thanks for sharing this, Steve.
Toads strike me as very civilized. The frogs in my pond are fun, but wild. Seeing one is an occasion. They are always keenly interested in escaping and/or staying out of sight. Toads just seem calmer, looking at things with a sort of calm, detached curiosity. It is hard to make friends with a frog. You can't talk to them. It just wouldn't occur to me to think it would enjoy my company.
I'm glad the toad is back.

Fall down six times. Stand up seven.
In case anyone is wondering.
This very well may be the same toad.
The American toad has a shortish life span but the common Euro toad have been known to live near 40 years.
Look it up.
Depending on how one takes the whole afterlife thing this may be one of Steve's kin. Prolly why it puts up with him or hes waiting for Steve to become a toad too. Karmically speaking.

You may think I'm raving mad (my wife hasn't stopped laughing since I told her), but the toad called out to me last night to attract my attention. When I went out into the rain to check my rain-gauge the toad was not in its normal place. As I walked back from the rain-gauge, about 100 feet from the house, I heard a squeaky little call, and there he was sitting on the drive in the dark. As I moved toward him he called again (I saw his mouth open). A sort of high-pitched, slightly unmusical note. He didn't move as I gave him a few pats on the head and had my nightly word with him.
There. You can get up off the floor now. Poor Steve. But I tell you it's not a word of a lie!

He showed up much earlier than usual this evening. Back outside the back door again this time. There are other toads in the garden but I alway recognise this chap by his slightly warmer reddish-brown colouring. And his size, of course, as they vary quite a bit. All the other toads recoil slightly if I touch them on the head but this fellow keeps still as I pat him and talk to him. I talk to him in the same way as I talk to my two old cats. Gently but in good English, sort of thing. I've just come back indoors after my second meeting with him tonight. After last night I decided he was a male, as female toads are usually silent I believe. I did consider whether I was going insane, but I've actually decided that I'm as sane as sane can be.
