I have heard many beautiful airs/laments over the years, but when I hear Finbar Furey playing 'Ned of the hill' on Uillean pipes it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stick up and puts a lump in my throat.

Tell us something.: I love uilleann pipes and I have become obsessed with them. But now the antispam software is just irritating the hell out of me so I am typing random crap to get past the minimum 100 character limit.

I vote

Brown Colleen (The Star of The County Down)

played very slow, with a lot of slides on a Low D.

May I suggest the Manx tune Ny Kirree Fo Niaghtey (The Sheep Under the Snow), a very old Dorian air which, although rather difficult to play on a whistle as it covers almost 3 octaves, is exceedingly beautiful when played well.

Hector the Hero...not just the tune, but look into the background on that one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hector_the_Hero Not technically Irish, but a sad tale and tune/song nonetheless.

try #2...I bought it after listening to that clip.

I find "The South Wind" rather sad, although I don't know if I would name it "THE SADDEST"...

Tell us something.: I play the Great Highland bagpipes (McCallums with an older, flatter Naill blackwood chanter) I futz around with penny whistles, and am considering learning uilleann pipes.

I'm a newbie on the whistle, but on the pipes Cha till Mac Cruimein segued into The Unknown Warrior is my favorite, followed by Flight of the Eaglets and Ranger's Lament.

I'm not sure sad is the right word for it, but the theme to the documentary "The Long Journey Home", a setting of Raglan Road played by the Irish Film Orchestra is a good one.

An Raibh Tu Ag An gCarraig? (Were you at the Rock?) is the saddest piece of Irish music I've come across. As far as non-Irish whistle friendly music goes, "Goin' Home" (sometimes known as, but not identical to, "Largo" of Dvorak's New World Symphony) is plenty sad.

The Unst Boat Song.

Why? Not just because it's about fisherman perishing in a storm.

Because it's in Norn, a language of which so little was preserved, it can never be revived.

I hate it when that happens.
