Chewie was our bounciest ferret...when playing, instead of running, he would sometimes do a kind of four-footed hop that made him look like Tigger. He loved to pounce on other ferrets. He didn't really do much to them after he handed on them, he just loved to pounce on them.

And he loved to dig. He was our little digger.

One picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words. Here's a little movieI took a few years ago, featuring Chewie digging around on a fluffy pet bed and getting himself pounced by Iggle, and the happy mayhem that followed.

Chewie died of a combination of cancer and adrenal disease. We knew it was coming but the day still came way too soon.

He and 'Bug were tightly bonded. We lost 'Bug first. Now maybe in some place and time far from here, they are playing and pouncing together again.

You know, losing a pet is a different pain from losing a person. Losing a person is a wide, deep, slow ocean of pain, too big to be seen or comprehended all at once. Losing a pet is more of a sharp, deep cut. You can see all of it at once. You know you'll recover in days instead of years.

But it still hurts like hell when it happens.

My sympathies, James. Our pet bereavements have been hard. Not, as you say, like losing family or friends too soon, but a loss made no less by the fact that they were always there, and now the empty space is too big.

sorry for your loss, the is no stillness or silence greater than the void left by a beloved, precious pet friend, who is now gone.

I'm sorry James. Unfortunately, besides care and feeding and loving, we also have to take on the responsibility of knowing when "that time" if for our pets, as hard as it can be to make that decision.

It's true.

And don't mistake me: yes, I'm sad, but I'll be the first to say that the joy and laughter that first 'Bug and now Chewie contributed to our lives far outweighs the sorrow of their deaths.

You can't have that joy without paying the price of that sorrow...and the sorrow is thus worth it: the true tragedy would be to miss that joy.

I'm really sorry for your loss

It's always a pity losing a pet. It's incredible the affection that we can take to our pets. They are just another member of our family.
