Patriotic songs

Post by breqwas »

Every country and every nation has some songs that are somewhat of the essence of its patriotic spirit. They change from time to time, but there are always some.

I suppose there are people from Ireland, England, USA, France, etc - could you share the songs or the music that is the part of your national pride? That's just my curiosity, but I think that would be interesting - everyone knows the anthems, but few know more.

My two cents (or five copecks, as it is said here), just in order to share and to explain what I hope others will post.

1) National anthem of Russia. No, not "of USSR" - of Russia. It has new words, but music is the same.

One more "all-times favorite" - cavalry march that comes from the beginning of 18th century, times of Peter the 1st.

Two marches of early XX century, "Farewell of Slavianka" and "Sickness for Home", both are great.

2) Music from times of the war:

"Sacred War" - song from first days of war.
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/saintwar.mp3

A song about girl who waits the soldier from war, keeping her love - "Katyusha"
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/katyusha.mp3

"Victory Day" - late song, written 30 years after the war, but it became one of most popular ones of that kind. A dedication to all veterans.

There are lot's of these songs, but it's not music but the lyrics what is well known in them.

3) Some stuff of all sorts

"The battle goes on". The song about russian revolution, though written in 1974. Communism has gone, but the music is still great.
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/prodboi4.mp3

"Wide is my country". Song from soviet times, the first notes of it were call letters of moscow radio.
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/radio.mp3
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/shstran2.mp3

"Volga" - song about that great river
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/techetre.mp3

"Time, forward!" - is still used on TV.
http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/vrvpered.mp3

5) The only more-or-less "modern" thing. A song from unrest times of early 90s, "Motherland" my Yuri Shevchuk. Very, very different from all of the above.

http://russmus.net/song.jsp?band=DDT&album=8&song=5#eng - lyrics in english

6) And the last. :)

Scottish patriotic songs:

(ignore Gordon Kennedy speaking rubbish at the start)

Not really about Scotland, but it's a common song at big events here:

That'll do for now. More later.

National Anthem
It's a Grand Old Flag
Battle Hymn of the Republic
America the Beautiful

Probably more that I can't think of.
I'm no longer trying a new posting paradigm

I wish I could find my high school fight song...

There is this golden oldie from WWII
"Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition"

Yankee Doodle A British song of mockery that was embraced by the the United States.

"My Country, 'Tis of Thee", sung to the tune of God save the king. A rather bland uninspiring song often used as an unofficial national anthem until "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the official one.

The "The Star-Spangled Banner" is based off of a 1814 poem and sung to the tune "To Anacreon in Heaven". The poem was written in four parts the first asking questions, and the remainder answering those questions. Only the first part of the poem is ever sung.

"She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" There are several versions of the song that originated around WWI, but usually less hopeful ending than "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" but still a more inspiring Cavalry song than "Fiddlers' Green".
"Be not deceived by the sweet words of proverbial philosophy. Sugar of lead is a poison."

I don't like any patriotic songs, but this is sort of the exact opposite, an Anti-American Irish folk song sung by Sinead O'Connor: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oGid0BMm7VA

I think the US is due for a new biggie. The country singers have come the closest, but they are just a bit too saccharine. The sophisticates can't handle that one that has the chorus "But I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free" or whatever. But it's pretty catchy. Independence Day is pretty good too, but it's been ruined by Hannity, who uses it as a theme.

Which is one good reason not to like her. :x And Weeks, no "sophisticate" is ever going to come up with a patriotic song about America, because you have to have a small bit of patriotism to do it.

I find it hard to beat Woody's work. We sing the Canadian and American versions with equal gusto. Woody Guthrie's song, "This Land is Your Land."

Is that actually from "Och! Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye" I can't find anything definitive one way or 'nother.

Not my favourite version of the song, but he knows most of the words..

Slan,
D.
And many a poor man that has roved,
Loved and thought himself beloved,
From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes.
