Oh yeah, for Amber Ale, Boont is high up there.

Nowadays, everyone is into Belgian style ale. You need a goldurned directory to figure out all the refinements within it, though...

While the major American brewers produce something more akin to water than beer, the micro-brewers (both pubs and bottlers) are putting out beers to rival anything European.

My favorites are Copperhead Pale Ale and Skyhigh Rye by Freestate Brewery, Possumtrot Brown Ale and Muddy Mo' Stout by the 75th Street Brewery, and Boulevard Dry Stout.

Hurray for craft brews (and home brewing as well...I need to find the time to start back up at that).

Anything by Ommegan, New Belgian Brewery are pretty well up there. I like the Belgian style of beer, especially with frites and mayo. National distribution, .i.e. airport lounge, Sam Adams works all the time.

The finest American beer always comes in a can, a cold can.

Rest assured, that every can has a label, but then beer guzzling never was an innelectual activity.

So, just grab a cold one, never mind the label, and you are thereby assured to have first class, quality American beer.

Yeah, I've lived in Europe, but for the same money I can have 4 or 5 American cans of beer for the price of just one of those European beers.

'Nuff said.

Very good, IMO - Schlafly's Oatmeal Stout or Coffee Stout, out of St. Louis.
http://www.schlafly.com/beers.shtml I'll hopefully be reacquainting myself with them next weekend. :D

Seriously, THIS is a great American beer, with my endorsement.

So, how come I've never seen this beer in a can???

Dogfish Head Brewery consistently amazes me. Their specialty beers are intelligent and creative(I'm referring to the research involved in making them...not the mental capacity of the beers themselves) and their regular and seasonal brews are outstanding examples of their respective varieties. Their IPAs are the standard by which I judge all others.

Other american breweries I love are: Rogue, Anchor, Sierra Nevada, Ommegang, Brooklyn, Boulder, North Coast, Avery, Stoudts, and Oskar Blues.

I could keep listing them....I work in a pub with 50 beers on draft and over 100 bottles :)

People have mentioned Anchor Steam, but not any of the other great products of the Anchor brewery.
One of the best American things I've had is Liberty Ale. Also Anchor Porter.
Then there's Anderson Valley Brewing Company.
Their Barney Flats is possibly the best thing I've ever had. The Boont Amber is also great. (Some of their products feature some text in "Boontling" on the labels, the language spoken only in that town. Look it up.)
Some great stuff also from the MacTarnahan's Brewing Company such as their MacTarnahan's and their Honey Beer.
It perhaps goes without saying that all these things must be had draught from the tap, not in bottles. Difficult but rewarding to find.

Budweiser seems to be a favorite American beer in Ireland.

yep, that beer is the best bang for the buck :D
NO WAY : you get that in Alabama?

(beats IPA's hands down IMHO) :D

and ya know, all this talk about Belgian brews; If Im gonna go there, I might as well open a good Gewurtztraminer instead...
(Cali Gw's are great, BTW!!!)

THING IS, there's a plethora of 'microbreweries' out there producing local product they know is gonna sell to their crowd. Anything along this line is way better than the heartless, mass-produced pee that passes for lager here.

Pass the port. :P yum.

It may get drank by preference in Ireland; in Arkansas, most people I know who drink Bud are drinking it because it's cheap.

I can also recommend their Deep Ender's Dark. It's my favorite porter, but hard to find around here.
