Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Favorite hornpipes

It occurs to me I don't know a lot of hornpipes--most of them the standards: Off to California, Cronin's, Buck on the Mountain. My favorite of the ones I do know is Fairies Hornpipe. I also like Galway Hornpipe.

I want to learn some more--what are your favs?

I was going to say that I'm currently working on the "Fairy Hornpipe", but after a few minutes research, it appears it's actually the "Fairy Queen" hornpipe I'm working on. (This, incidentally, is why taking someone's musical skill as a marker of their overall ITM knowledge is dodgy -- the best fiddler in our group had no name for it, and the second best fiddler had the two tune names mixed up.)

Anyway, the "Fairy Queen" is definitely cool. I like the four-part version of the Galway, "McDermott's", and the four-part "Derry Hornpipe". Ed Reavy wrote some awesome hornpipes, as well -- "Lad O'Beirne's" is great, and I'm currently fascinated by "The Lone Bush".

I play very few hornpipes too.

I like, of course, the set Boys Of Bluehill / Harvest Home, also The Wonder Hornpipe and The Sailor's (or "College") hornpipe.
"Belfast hornpipe" is very funny as well, but I haven't learnt it yet.

I'll chime in with McGivney's Fancy, too.

That's my set! Teehan's first, then Bobby Casey's. Right? It's a beautiful set.

There is a Cooley's hornpipe that I learned off a Mary Bergin CD... lots of fun to play.

Hi Michael

Yep, it is your set. I saw it on one of your flute posts and thought nothing of it, thinking it was a bit strange putting a slow reel with a hornpipe.
Then after learning 'Bobby Casey's' I went back and listened to your post.Nice playing :)
Putting them together really works.

cheers

"Rights of Man" is listed as a hornpipe in McCullough's 101 Session Tunes - I like it a lot!

One of my faves is The Cuckoo's Nest, which I actually ran across by accident trying to track down a different tune with the same name.
