I think that picture is really cruel. The cat is clinically obese and will not live for very long if it carries so much weight. It will hardly be able to walk as it is. Not good.

I have a nasty, goldfish memoried tabby that is VERY close to being that fat.

I've tried everything to get her down and nothing has worked.

Its true she doesn't seem to mind the not walking part.

She especially likes to lay her head into her bowl and eat laying down.... and purrrs and purrrs while doing it.

As far as having a short life... she is 15 and I can't wait for that evil little pig to snuff it.

She'll live another 10 just to spite me.

I would much rather my senior cat still looked like that rather than wasting away, which he's doing now. He was deserted for awhile, weighed about what he weighs now when we got him. He overate and he enjoyed it and felt secure. We put him on all sorts of diets, which took the weight off, but only because he would escape to hunt and got worms. So we decided we'd rather have a happy doormat than a miserable "healthy" cat.

Now, at about the tender age of 16 or so, he has a hyperactive thyroid and we're having a dickens of a time getting the medication right, plus I think the medicine doesn't agree with him. I'd take my fat old cat back any time -- even if he died tomorrow, he'd be a lot happier than he is as skin and bones.

May or may not be, but pregnancy alone wouldn't account for all that weight. Cats tend to stay pretty svelt even when "expecting" (which is why many an unsuspecting owner, in the days before regular spaying, was surprised by a litter of kittens!).

It's unfortunate, but I think that pets often develop the same health issues their caretakers have. If the humans are snacking all the time, chances are the pets are too.

After a while, people and their pets start to resemble each other, which may or may not be good....

Fortunately, it works the other way too. I'm trying to add more fruits and veggies to my diet. Now whenever I grate some carrots or chop up an apple, the dog comes running into the kitchen with this excited, expectant expression on her face. "Wow!! If Mama's eating this, I want some too!" She has even started to like grated cabbage.

Eeeew -- Think about what that cat was licking just before it licked your whistle and what it probably went right back to licking when it was done licking your whistle.
