Apologies. Spelling corrected.
I had not realized Kilfarboy was an Irish placename.

I think this, especially this last clip, is some of the best whistling I've heard. Is there a cd or any other way I could get more of his music?

I do and why wouldn't I? Even had some Patsy Touhey piping and Tom Morrison flute 78rpms dropped off by the postman. Lovely.

Who doesn't? A chieftains 1 on vinyl is what started me on the long and painful road of whistle obsession :)

Peter Laban wrote:Interesting enough I uploaded a slow air by the same player (from a 1975 home recording) and linked it to a thread a few weeks ago. After two weeks it had 8 downloads all done during the first week, I took it down then.

What does that tell us?
I would like to hear the slow air. Thanks, Arbo. BTW, I ony read half of the posts, but I did find the clip enjoyable. Fast , yes, and maybe it would be nice to hear a more relaxed pace, but thoroughly enjoyable. And the tonguing added a nice touch, though got somewhat tiresome after a while...

I love this guy's playing. It's like there's no fingers, whistle, or whatever involved, it's like it's just transferring directly from his imagination to my ears.

Hmmm ... I voted that I like it.

I like it because of the melancholie/lonely setting that seems to grow in the performance as a backdrop. This is probably mostly in the tunes themselves, but the player has recognised the intent and respected it - also skilled enough to execute the tune without killing the message.

AS for technique - tongueing and all that, well, I almost always hear the performance first then have to force myself to go hunting for technique. Unless the performance sucks - then the technique is all I hear. Hate that.

The last time my playing got some advice/critique from an accomplished Irish player, he said "you're tonguing the downbeat too much." even though I wasn't - I was cutting it. Then he demonstrated some useful tips for tonguing to support the rhythm - e.g. the off beats on jigs like tenpenny bit, black rougue, Ballinsloe fair etc. Tongueing helps the lift, but too much makes it all too lumpy. And I went off to listen to Brid O'donohue's rendition of "na ceanabhan banna" (sp?) and now understand that tune a little better.

Another bit of advice I got from a great player that seems cogent here was from a Bluegrass player. He said: "the main difference between ITM and Bluegrass is your stance against the beat - in ITM it's usually strict and upright, sometimes a little laid-back - the weight is even on the feet or a little on the heels. In Bluegrass you lean forward against the beat, the weight is on your toes - when you feel like you are about to fall forward, the music begins to fly."

The clip seems a little Bluegrass to me, but I still like it.
All the best!

looks like slightly less than 3/4 of the folks like it. On the other hand, only about 1/8 disliked it.

A little off topic I know but here's a great little turntable that's handy for putting your vinyl collection on to your hard drive
