Fundamental Truth
Fundamental Truth
GREEN GROW THE RASHES, O
Bobbie Burns
There's nought but care on ev'ry han',
In every hour that passes, O
What signifies the life o' man,
An' 'twere na for the lasses, O.
Chorus
Green grow the rashes, O
Green grow the rashes, O
The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent among the lasses, O,
The warl'y race may riches chase,
An' riches still may fly them, O
An' tho' at last they catch them fast,
Their hearts can ne'er enjoy them, O.
Chorus
Green grow the rashes, O
Green grow the rashes, O
The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent among the lasses, O,
But gie me a cannie hour at e'en,
My arms about my dearie, O,
An' warl'y cares an' war'ly men
May a' gae tapsalteerie, O!
Chorus
Green grow the rashes, O
Green grow the rashes, O
The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent among the lasses, O,
For you sae douce, ye sneer at this
Ye're nought but senseless asses, O
The wisest man the warl' e'er saw,
He dearly lov'd the lasses, O.
Chorus
Green grow the rashes, O
Green grow the rashes, O
The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent among the lasses, O,
Auld Nature swears, the lovely dears
Her noblest work she classes, O
Her prentice han' she try'd on man,
An' then she made the lasses, O.
Chorus
Green grow the rashes, O
Green grow the rashes, O
The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent among the lasses, O,

Only that it was the fundamental truth.
As an undergraduate philosophy paper once put it:
'The meaning of life is found only in snatches.'
I had better add that I think this is a beautiful
poem. There is a gorgeous rendition of it
as a song (it seems from the liner notes
that Burns wrote the tune, but I'm not certain)
on Cherish the Ladies, New Day Dawning.
The Fundamental Truth is that the
greatest good for men isn't to be found in
riches and power but in the company of women
and in making love to them.

Anyways, when Lady Fortune smiles on us, we get essays with gems like this in them. Thank you
