Sweeny Todd...

Post by brewerpaul »

Holy Moly! Charlene and I just went to see this and were blown away.
Be forewarned: Johnny Depp does not play a cute Jack Sparrow type in this movie. This film is VERY gory and graphic. It's probably not much of a spoiler to tell that the story involves a revenge killer who slits his victims' throats with a straight razor. You'll see a LOT of these, portrayed VERY graphically, with fountains of spurting blood. However, they're never really a surprise so you can close your eyes for the moment.

The whole production is very dark and atmospheric. In looks, Depp reminds me of a demented Beethoven. He and Helena Bonham Carter do all of their own singing and while their voices are not trained operatic types, they suit the music perfectly. Alan Rickman plays his slimy role to the hilt and Sacha Baron Cohen is great as an "Italian" barber competitor.
Check it out, but leave younger kids at home for sure.

I saw a preview of this a week or so ago and do want to see it. If for nothing else, the costuming looks fantastic!

I'm glad to see your review here. Now I want to see it even more.

We have very much enjoyed the stage show, morbid as it is. I haven't gotten to the few movies I'm interested in yet this season, but this is one.

I can't wait to see it! The very first stage play I ever saw (in Virginia City, Montana, when I was all of 7) was "Sweeny Todd." It was gory enough then, but I was fascinated, nonetheless. The Tim Burton/Johnny Depp combination here has got to be perfect.

Looking at the cast, and knowing the story, there isn't a thing in the world that would make me think it's anything less than brilliant.

I can't wait to get to see it.

I typically do not care much for musicals.

The sudden bursts of singing simply knock me out of the story.

That said, I love the 1982 version of this--it rocks hard.

I can't wait to see the new version! :D

I'm thinking about seeing it. I can't get my head around a musical slasher.

Oh, do. Like James, normally I couldn't give a rip about musicals, but for me ST:TDBOFS is different. The song where they discuss the varying qualities of pies one gets out of the victims is hilarious, esp. the bit about lawyers being oily.

Haven't seen the new movie, yet, but I probably will.

Don't get me started. Seriously. You have no idea how relieved I am, nay, that I thank heaven every day, that the theme from Cats has gone away from public airwaves. I was ready to kill something.

Normally, I despise musicals.

Airy, fluffy, feel-goody pieces of shyte. :o :D

Sweeney Todd is quite different.

Not only is it dark, it revels in that darkness.

It's like watching Mary Poppins carrying a dripping butcher knife and an obviously heavy bucket and giggling like a maniac about the "master's brains" as she makes her way to the kitchen.

Great fun! :boggle:  :D

We're lucky in my neck of the woods. We have one - count it, ONE - radio music station that isn't a grueling chore of mindless pap. And, go figure, it's a subsidiary of Minnesota Public Radio. Like that's a stretch.

Even then, I can only listen to so much of it.
