Before that, crane bones were exceedingly popular. There were fierce arguments about whether whistles made from light-feathered cranes sounded brighter than the mellower whistles from dark-feathered cranes, but no real consensus. The low whistle fad never really took off, as too many makers were pecked to death by angry ostriches. Then everyone turned to inventing pots and writing, and the whole whistle craze died down for a dozen millennia.

Well, yeah, except that these are technically more like quenas or sakuhachis.

You're welcome! The Neanderthal flute is also interesting, if more controversial. People are still debating whether it's really an instrument, or just a bone with bear holes.

Pretty Good, MT Guru!

Seriously, though, while the "traditional" Irish whistle can be made of anythiing, I do get this little personal spark of pleasure when I play my Clarke Origional--a real, original "tin whistle."

Heck, so that's what I've been doing wrong! Those bits of tobacco really clog up the fipple.

Historically, the terms whistle, pipe and flute are pretty interchangeable.

Glass, ceramics...I believe the whistle made by our esteemed reviewer Wanderer that I tried some time ago, was made of corian, for example, and a nice player and beautiful to behold.

A Happy and Healthy New Year and Merry Christmas to all!
