SYN meets Light-rail
Well, I never thought I'd see the day!
The irrisistable force has met the imoveable object (in this case the indestrucatable object!)
It puts me in-mind of the famous "bambi meets Godzilla" - similar outcome really, and a caution to those who would practice in-transit!
Here we go - we now have photographic evidence that the indestructable SYN whistle CAN be defeated - but the minimum effort seems to be no less than a Melbourne tram! Here's what happens when your SYN goes under the wheels of steel!
Interestingly, the tuning-slide still works!
Judge for yourselves (i'm told the tuning has been affected somewhat):
Many thanks to Louise who sent me this pic!

cane loses to dodge
Its not the tragedy that yours was,, but yesterday a fellow at work gave me a little cane whistle. The ones painted yellow with the band of red around the end. It was in a little leather slip in case with some kokopellis on it. I was delighted as this exact kind of whistle is what got me into whistles and flute 10 yrs. ago. When I left work I evidently dropped as I got in my truck. As I backed out it sounded like I had run over a can or something. But unfortunately not,, it was the cane whistle. It is now 3 long pieces and a plug.
Bummer , but Im just glad it wasnt my Howard.

I had a Clarke Sweetone that met a much similar fate when I was riding in the passenger seat on the way to the lake with the whistle in my front right pants pocket (facing the passenger door) and it somehow slipped out of my pocket. Well needless to say, after I opened the door for a quick second it somehow managed to fall right where the door shuts and crunch!! From about the B hole down did it get a good smashing, so the fipple was alright... So I gave that whistle a Navy burrial and tossed it out to the lake. Needless to say that cured me of carrying whistles in my pants pockets while riding in a car..
Curious though, I don't think that Syn whistle that was, accidentally fell onto the tracks... I smell sabatoge...

I'm sure he'll still be able to squeeze a tune out of it.Guinness wrote:No doubt it will play a bit flat.Mitch wrote:i'm told the tuning has been affected somewhat

Just because we see flat whistle don't mean it bee flat whistle. If we take dee flat whistle to a flat player he will stutter "Gee, flat whistle, thanks f-for f-flat whistle" and 'e (flat player) will play dee flat whistle.Jeferson wrote:I'm sure he'll still be able to squeeze a tune out of it.Guinness wrote:No doubt it will play a bit flat.Mitch wrote:i'm told the tuning has been affected somewhat
The Walrus
What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?
The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

It's sad to see such a thing but I really believe that it had to staged. The chances of dropping a long cylinder on a railway track and having it stay put to be crushed perfectly parallel to its length by the wheels is right up there with winning the biggest lottery prize!

Mitch, can you post some sound clips? It's hard to tell what it sounds like from the photo.Mitch wrote:Judge for yourselves (i'm told the tuning has been affected somewhat)
