Compact polymer flute?

Post by gododdin »

Hi all

So I have an M&E plastic flute and I have a McGee GLP... But am I happy? Well, yes, sort of... I like playing the McGee because it has great tone, it's light in weight and easy to fill. But I also like the bomb-proof qualities of the M&E, particularly as I recently took up sea kayaking and I'm looking forward to some good camping trips next summer where being impervious to damp will be important. :)

So my question is - is anyone making good compact flutes in polymer which would have the best of both worlds?

Thanks

The Dixon 3pc conical bore polymer is more compact than the M&E/Seery polymers, as it lacks the extra foot joint and splits into 3 equal sections (of about 22 cm)- also lighter as it doesn't have the metal tuning slide.

and it plays fine. not that it is much lighter, weighs about 300 grams and something (10 oz ).
only disadvantage might be that the material he uses is kinda slippery, unlike other delrin flutes. (but ymmv)

Howdy,

You may want to consider the Copley and Boegeli 3 piece Delrin flute.

Best,

Thanks for that Eilam - I had no idea that Terry McGee made the GLP in delrin... I just went on the website and have emailed Terry for a price and waiting time.

Another option .... www.forbesflutes.com
Short foot, so it's basically a sawed-off Pratten

Hey GodOddin,

You didn't specify key. :D

M&E makes a polymer F flute that almost fits in a pocket!

I hope you have a Swell time sea-kayaking! I myself am envious!

I got the chance for a brief toot on a Dixon 3pce conical polymer at a sesh last night - and was quite impressed on the basis of a few toots and some arpeggios - didn't get to play a tune, much less a set on it. It is infinitely better than his awful cylindrical conduit tubing things. Pretty large embouchure and small tone holes. Easy to sound and responsive, comfortable to hold and not noticeably heavy. (N.B. My perceptions of weight are distorted by my familiarity with my heavy old R&R Patent Head!) Seemed OK to me.

Off topic (sort of) but never mind - we're fortunate in having some of the best sea-kayaking in the world on our doorstep! Here are a couple of links to the landscape and kayaking where I live:

I certainly don't. Scheizz, I have a gig on Friday, haven't played a flute for weeks, and I forgot to take it with me here. I'm screwed...
