Why are fipple and chiff considered...

Post by The_Celtic_Bard »

How come those words are not considered to be spelled correctly or not considered words at all?

I say let us start a petition for Webster's Dictionary or The Oxford Dictionary to amend this.

What makes you say they're not? Just because they're not in your spellchecker?
Chiff may be a recent, made-up word, but fipple's been around for ages.
It's certainly in the OED.

Well then petition spellcheck, it is just bothersome when it says a word you very well know to be a word and correctly spelled to be underlined in red.

I think you can just tell it to learn the word, so it won't pester you next time.

Look. Spellcheck is geared for normal people. Normal people don't use "chiff" or "fipple" in their sentences. Face it, The_Celtic_Bard: you're not normal. None of us are. None.

Good. Embrace your special place in life.

I'll tell you, it gives me satisfaction to have things like Spellcheck red-line perfectly good words, and I'm like, Hah. Poor, ignorant Spellcheck. How beige your life must be.

Be like the students in my College English classes. If spellcheck says the word is misspelled they just add it as is to the dictionary. No problem, no red stuff, and the language is enlarged. :(

Do we need a dictionary entry for Chiff or Fipple? Or "Chiff and Fipple"? Does anyone worry on this board that they'll accidentally type "Chuff and Fopple"? Or "Piff and Tibble"?

I forgot. It's not "Chiff and Fipple". It's "Chiff & Fipple." Damn that ampersand!

You spelled it wrong-- it's O - R - N - E - R - Y. No D.
