what is the best/strangest/coolest thing you've ever won

Post by mutepointe »

the book giveaway thread was nice. so i started this thread. what things have you folks won?

the best thing i ever won was the guess the number of jelly beans in the jar contest. i know i won the jelly beans and the jar but i have no clue what the prize was. having my name in the bulletin as the winner (smartest person in the world) was my real prize.

I colored the hush puppy when I was roughly 10 (with some consultation from my smarter older brother on some shading specifics,) and won a hush puppy (basset hound) watch with eyes that ticked back and forth with the seconds.

In fifth grade music class I skipped rope to the Japanese chant Jan Ken Pon besting the next longest jumper 42 to 15.
I also wiped them out at the dreidl game, and an eskimo seal-hunting game that was supposed to encourage cooperative play, but didn't.

In high school I went to a Mel Brooks movie marathon (Young Frankenstein, The Producers, and Silent Movie,) and won the Young Frank soundtrack as a door prize. Not so great as dinner music, plus it was an LP. I don't think I still have it.

I won (for my team) a mock College Bowl competition in the Student Union at U. of Maryland by naming all the characters in the movie Fame.

Once I won an honorable mention in a Bloomfield Chiff short story contest. That, of course, was my highest honor thus far.

Tell us something.: I've picked up the tinwhistle again after several years, and have recently purchased a Chieftain v5 from Kerry Whistles that I cannot wait to get (why can't we beam stuff yet, come on Captain Kirk, get me my Low D!)

I don't believe I've ever in my life won an entry contest (drawing or raffle, etc.), come to think of it, not for my lack of trying.

I came in second in our company's Texas Hold 'Em tournament last december (gotta defend my title this year, arrrr), that was pretty nifty; won a two night stay at the local Marriott with included meals and two movie tickets. I guess thats more of a skill thing, tho, so it doesn't count.

When I was in the fifth grade (actually, not long before I started playing flute, coincidentally), with the help of my mom and our next door neightbors "artwork" on my face / hands / clothes, I won the "PTA's Dress Like a Hobo" contest.

The prize was a transistor radio, which was cool.

Several years ago, I entered a Chiff & Fipple contest to benifit a women's shelter, and won a Howard Low D, which is a very cool whistle.

Unless I'm forgetting something, that's it.

I count myself very lucky; some folks never win even once. I won twice.

And I married a beautiful woman who is my match and complement in every way. Being lucky in love is the luckiest thing of all! :)

I've won exactly three things in my life based on blind luck-

When I was six I correctly guessed how many beans were in a jar and won a
kaleidescope.

I took a chance on a hand knitted sweater (the skye terriers on it were of
yarn made from skye hair) I still wear it.

Way back when I first discovered this crazy board, DCrom gave away a
Laughing Whistle for his birthday- I won it!

The best win I ever had was due to twenty years of hard work and dedication
and some luck too- my skye Blossom(third generation of my breeding)
won Best of Breed at the Skye Terrier Club of America's National
Specialty. That was truly sweet.

Many years ago when I was a new dean at a local community college I won a coffee cup imprinted with the picture of a hot Porsche convertible at the annual state Admissions and Records convocation. I have been attempting to rise to the level of having that car in my garage but to no avail. :sniffle:

But life goes on . . . . :D

a WHISTLE, of course!

Post by HDSarah »

I very rarely win anything, although I frequently buy small raffle tickets for various causes.

However, a couple years ago, I won a WHISTLE from Avanutria for submitting the best clean joke. I thought that was pretty cool, and I do still have that whistle. I also thought it was cool that someone appreciated my geeky jokes! :D
