Here's a cute story of how one man acquired his Rudall.....from the IRTRAD list from several years ago (Thomas Johnson) that I've kept all this time. Anyone else find their instrument in such a cool way? Hmm.

"Here's another true story Wild Jim from Belfast told me in a pub in Dingle.
We'd played some tunes, me on flute and Jim on the whistle. Jim said he used
to play the flute some years ago. I asked him what make of flute did he play.
Oh, he said, a wee Rudall & Rose. I nearly fell of the chair. I asked him if
he still had it. Aye, he said, and then he told the story of how he'd got it.

Some twenty years ago Jim and his best friend Sam Murray, reckoned to be one
of the best flutemakers in Irland today, where at the Ulster folk museum.
They went there to meet a man who had some old flutes for sale. Sam went off
to talk to someone whilst Jim talked to yer man. Jim saw amongst the flutes a
Rudall & Rose. How much do you want for this one, he asked. Oh, I don't know,
yer man said. What do you think it's worth? I don't know, said Jim, How much
are you asking for it? Oh Christ I don't know, yer man says. This went on for
a bit, then Jim said well say a price. Jesus, I don't know, yer man still
says. I'm selling these flutes for a lady, her husbands passed on and she
just wants rid of them, just give me something for it. Jim knew the Rudall
was worth a lot even back then 20 years ago. I don't know what to offer, said
Jim, give me a price. Right said yer man, give me 12 pounds then if that's
alright. Jim nearly took his hand off. A few minutes later Sam Murray came in
the room. He was more than envious when he found out what a deal Jim had
made. He brought a couple of flutes off yer man, but Jim got the R&R.

I hate to be a skeptic (no I don't). But that sounds a lot like the corvette story.

The story is true. The man who brought the flute, Jim McKillop (not the fiddler, but a Belfast schoolteacher) sold the Rudall a couple of years ago. Sam measured the flute (as he did others) to get info for his own flute making. Jim McKillop also was involved in the larger than life, but true story of the nun and the Billy McCormick Taylor set. Jim's a fantastic, lovely man, I wish there were more like him
