Trivia: In certain regions of the US (Texas, for example), an armadillo is also called "possum-on-the-half-shell".

I met a 'possum called Frank Mills
On September twelfth right here
In front of the Waverly
But unfortunately
He got hit by a car.

The possums down under were called possums simply because they were considered to be more-or-less the same thing as the American possums. The oriental persimmons got their name after the American persimmons, likewise. In both cases the words were transliterations into English from native North American languages.

Well, I know I'm not as cultured as some people on C&F, yet I've nonetheless been in a lot of places and met a lot of people and I have never met a single individual who pronounces the "o." Not one. I guess that's why I didn't think and I spelled it "possum" first when in retrospect I clearly meant "opossum."

Both words, while technically meaning different animals, are always pronounced the same in my experience. Sorry.

I think it would be alright to call it an oppossum when you actually mean the opposite.

Good Evening Furshine,
Get out of the road,
You shouldn't stand there,
Well it don't bode,

Good Morning Furshine,
Don't stare at the car,
Go hunt for grubs, worms
or stay where you are...

Squishy, squash, squishy, varoom, skitter, smishy, stay out of the road,
Scamper, stare transfixty, you'll never live to sixty, stay out of the road,
Cars are gonna get you, I don't want to upset you, but frisbees don't look good with fur...

She asks me why
I'm such a possum guy
I'm possum noon and night
Possum that's a fright
I'm possum high and low
Don't ask me why
(cuz he) Don't know
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead
O Darling

Gimme a possum with hair
Short bristly hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Possum length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair (hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair)
Flow it, show it
Long as Gord can grow it
My hair

Baby possums are cute. Grown up possums are ugly. How anybody would mistake a giant rat for a cat is mind- :boggle: -ing

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To prove to the possum it could be done.

Best wishes,
